Summary
The dramatic and moving account of the struggle for life inside the World Trade Center on the morning of September 11, when every minute counted.

At 8:46 AM on September 11, 2001, 14,000 people were inside the twin towers -- reading e-mails, making trades, eating croissants at Windows on the World. Over the next 102 minutes, each would become part of a drama for the ages, one witnessed only by the people who lived it -- until now.

New York Times reporters Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn rely on hundreds of interviews; thousands of pages of oral histories; and phone, e-mail, and emergency radio transcripts. They cross a bridge of voices to go inside the infernos, seeing cataclysm and heroism, one person at a time, to tell the affecting, authoritative saga of the men and women -- the 12,000 who escaped and the 2,749 who perished -- who made 102 minutes count as never before.

Reviews

The book started a bit slowly, and the jumps between characters was a bit hard to follow. But this is a unique perspective on the horrific attack our country suffered in 2001. It is fascinating to hear how a chance decision by some determined whether they lived or died. Well told.

This story is told in a remarkable way. It does not sensationalize or rehash what the main stream media has reported over the years. What an intense and insightful view of this tragedy.

Very intense and captivating book. Kept my attention 100% and very easy to follow. It was very fact based and still told the stories of some of the heroes of 9/11. Highly recommended.

Touching, heartwarming, factual, a must listen to if you feel you are losing sight on the fact that our wonderful country is made up of beautiful people still who will give their lives to help others. Although this book made me cry I still feel everyone should listen to it.

I don't normally take the time to write reviews, but I was awed by this book. The authors do a fabulous job of relating thoughts and perspectives of the people in the Twin Towers on 9/11. I can only imagine the desperation and fear and will never truly understand it since I didn't go through the tragedy myself. But every American should listen to this book to gain an appreciation of the unintentional heroes of that day!

A truly heartbreaking 102 minutes. Such a tragedy is hard to fathom. I think this account helps us to realize the horror these people had to go thru. May God bless their families.

Very well done. Interesting without being sensationalistic. Does not "cash in" on this tragedy, but does make it personal.

Very, very, very interesting. Lots of data. Excellently done! Must listen to completely even if you have chills running down your spine and cry and have visions of this nightmare...must read!!!

I am so sorry that this book was abridged. I am now in the process of getting friends and family to read/listen. This is a book not to be missed. Factual, yet capable of providing the "you are there" feeling without becoming "sappy" or purposefully playing on the emotions. In the case of this horrific tragedy, the facts do that well enough on their own.

Similar to other books and movies but very well done. Put you there.Nice piece of work. Enjoyed it.

Thought the story was too drawn out and it dragged on and on. It was hard to visualize and follow along with the story jumping back and forth from tower 1 to tower 2.

A clear rendition of the events of 9/11. A worthwhile read and because it draws together all the facts, rather than dramatizing the horror of the event.

I'm only on Track 7 of this book so far, but I'd just like to mention that Track 6 was pretty ruined with it skipping (like the CD skipped), however it's a download!! Pretty unhappy about that since I missed some of the story. I hope not to encounter that for the next 25 tracks.

It is a story that NEEDS to be told, and this is a good attempt at telling it. I wasn't crazy about the narrator, and the story got a little more political than I expected, but I never got to the place where I minded it. Passionate stories, wonderful real accounts, and compelling warnings make it interesting enough to listen to each disk with anticipation. Good, but not great

Wow. It is a rivetting story. It is an excellent account of what went on as people tried to survive in buildings that everyone thought were indestructible. I highly recommend this book.

Outstanding narrative of the events inside the twin towers on Sept. 11, 2001, without bogging down with extra discussion of the post-event sourcing. With each character, you don't know if they'll be a surivivor or a victim, and you understand why tower office workers, firemen and policemen alike responded the way they did. The final chapter provides an unbiased and critical review of the failures that took place on Sept. 11. Without trying to place blame, it provides a clear indiciation of what contributed to the disaster that took place after the attacks.

There are so many stories of survival and death surrounding September 11, 2001 that it would be impossible to document every one. This book provides several examples that are illustrative of what people experienced inside the towers. It also addresses the building structures and why they ultimatly failed. After reading this book, I have a true perspective on the attacks from the point of view of the victims and their rescuers.

This was a excellent book to listen to. I am sure there are a lot of people, like myself, that have put what happened on 911 in the back of their mind somewhere, not really thinking about it unless someone brings it up. Or maybe they think about it sometimes but don't really know what happened, during those 102 minutes, to the people in the towers and the brave Americans trying to get them out. I guarantee the human stories you hear about in this book will touch you and stay with you the rest of your life. Every American should read or listen to this book. We must never forget or diminish , in any way, what happened to the Twin Towers and America that day.

Virtually anytime you read the history of a disaster, it becomes clear that if just a few people had done some things differently, the loss of much life could have been prevented. Whether it be the Johnstown flood of the 1880's, Hurricane Katrina, or the attack on the World Trade Center buildings, natural or man-made distasters are nearly always made worse by politics, hubris and greed. It will never change. Here in what may be the most complete look a the 9/11 attacks on New York thus far, we see many more examples. Well written and well researched, you will experience a full range of emotions as you listen to this unabridged work. A very well done effort.

This is a book ever American should read! Very moving and well written. It puts Sept. 11, 2001 in better perspective and will make any reader think even more deeply about vital issues like public safety and high rise building security. Once finished, I had even greater respect for the brave fire fighters and policemen who unselfishly responded on 9/11. Ultimately, this is a story of great loss, courage and sacrifice.

Very good listen. I learned a lot of details about the actual structure of the twin towers and just how far businesses will go to increase their profit, even at the expense and safety of peoples lives.

Very good story. There were so many civilian heros in 911 that noone ever heard about until now. Hearing telephone conversations of people that perished in in the towers really put the whole thing in perspective. A story that everyone should hear.

I have read a lot of 9/11 material and this by far has been the most personal, heartfelt. I also strongly recommend "Against All Enemies", which I am now reading. 102 minutes is well worth the rent!

Gripping and informative. Describes in detail the many factors involved in the tragic and staggering loss of life in the towers, beginning even prior to Sept. 11, when the terrorists lit the fuse that caused the buildings to crumble. I couldn't take my ears off it, and my 13-year-old son also was captivated.
