Summary
Welcome to 44 Scotland Street, home to some of Edinburgh's most colorful characters. There's Pat, a twenty-year-old who has recently moved into a flat with Bruce, an athletic young man with a keen awareness of his own appearance. Their neighbor, Domenica, is an eccentric and insightful widow. In the flat below are Irene and her appealing son Bertie, who is the victim of his mother's desire for him to learn the saxophone and italian-all at the tender age of five. Love triangles, a lost painting, intriguing new friends, and an encounter with a famous Scottish crime writer are just a few of the ingredients that add to this delightful and witty portrait of Edinburgh society, which was first published as a serial in The Scotsman newspaper.

This book was exceptional. It had my laughing out loud at times. I love the narrative and the narrator. I can't wait to listen to more.

This is not what I was looking for in a mystery or a thriller. It is more a character study. I listen to this last week and already I can not tell what they were trying to solve. It is amusing in places. But very unbeleiveable.

I found this book vaguely amusing, but certainly not something I would recommend to most people. There was a minimum of action and the characters all seemed to be lacking in brain power, especially the man who removes the paint from the oil painting. It was fun to get a feel for Scotland. Just don't expect a page turner that you can put down.

Not a book for me. I just couldn't get into it. Sent it back unread. It was putting me to sleep. Sorry.

I laughed out loud several times whilst reading this book. I love the way that McCall Smith creates each of his characters. I also want to visit Edinburgh now that I've read this and other of his Scottish books. LOVED IT!
