Summary
Mattie Ross, a fourteen-year-old girl from Dardanelle, Arkansas, sets out to avenge her Daddy who was shot to death by a no-good outlaw. Mattie convinces one-eyed 'Rooster' Cogburn, the meanest U.S. marshal in the land, to ride along with her. In True Grit, we have a true American classic, as young Mattie -- as vital as she is innocent -- outdickers and outmaneuvers the hard-bitten men of the trail in a legend that will last through the ages.

This is one of the greatest American novels of all time, and Mattie Ross has one of the strongest, most compelling voices of any protagonist. Not only does this book paint the picture of the American frontier post-civil war, it explores rugged individualism—the heart of American culture. There are many great American novels, but this is the one you would hand to your friend from another country looking to understand what it means to be an American. Rooster, Mattie, and Le Beoff each display grit in the face of overwhelming odds. And unlike many “classics,” this book is hilarious! Like Huck Finn and To Kill a Mockingbird, it’s the kind of book that makes you laugh, cry, and feel like picking up again to enjoy the story, characters, and voice. Grapes of Wrath...not so much. I thought the narrator was really good (though her Mexican accent needed work), but the quality of the recording was poor. There were times when the swallowing or breathing of the narrator were distracting, and the interruptions telling us the disc number were buggy. It would be great if this one could be re-recorded using higher quality equipment.

The story is fast paced and really illustrates what life would be like in the late 1800s. I think the narration was well done and provided distinction between each character.

Not the genre I would usually choose but thoroughly enjoyed it. I loved the narrator's interpretation of the characters.

The story was entertaining. The narrator read as a fan of the book and is not a professional narrator. It showed. This is a book better read than listened to.
