Summary
A hilarious and biting memoir from the actor, comedian and Saturday Night Live alumni David Spade.

David Spade is best known for his harsh “Hollywood” Minute Sketches on SNL, his starring roles in movies like Joe Dirt and Tommy Boy,  and his seven-year stint as Dennis Finch on the series Just Shoot Me. Now, with a wit as dry as the weather in his home state of Arizona, the “comic brat extraordinaire” tells his story in Almost Interesting.

First Taking fans back to his childhood as a wannabe cool younger brother and recounting his excruciating road-tour to fame—when he was regularly mistaken for a ten year-old, Spade then dishes about his time crisscrossing the country as a comedian, for low-paying gigs and dragging along his mother’s old suitcase full of props. He also covers his years on SNL during the beloved Rock/Sandler/Farley era of the 1990s, including his close working relationship and friendship with Chris Farley and brags about the ridiculous perks that fame has brought into his life, including the constant fear of being fired, a crazy ex-assistant who attacked him while he was sleeping, a run-in with Eddie Murphy on the mean streets of Beverly Hills, and of course an endless supply of hot chicks.

Sometimes dirty, always funny, and as sharp as a tack, Almost Interesting reminds you why David Spade is one of our generation’s favorite funny guys.

David Spade has been one of my fave comics since first seeing him in the early 90s. That said my expectations may have been a bit high for this book, which almost lived up to its title. It’s a run of the mill story of hard work leading to medium stardom, filled with asides and quips that are sometimes funny yet hardly inspiring. The more you learn about Spade, the more his style of comedy makes sense. This tale of just a regular guy surrounded by super talented individuals who struggled through school, decided to be a comedian and struggled before landed long a a spot on SNL where he struggled, then moved into the sitcom world where he continued to struggle, definitely has its great moments. Anyone with an interest of what happens ‘behind the scenes’ will love the chapters detailing Spade’s years at SNL, laugh at his memories of his rivalry with Rob Schneider and be touched by his recounts of the on and off the screen close friendship with the late, great Chris Farley. Spades retelling of the ‘Skippy’ saga is the most humanizing part of the work where he experienced a nightmare that must be the fear of every celebrity. I can’t decide if the audio narration, by Spade made this book more or less enjoyable. The narration, hilarious quips aside is just like his stand up style.. deadpan and sardonic at times, the lit on fire by sarcastic mutterings in between the lines. All in all was entertaining and interesting ish, but not a compelling page turner (or listener) I found myself unable to put down.

I thought this would be funny but I was not prepared for just how funny this was! Spade is hysterical--I was laughing out loud throughout--but also a great storyteller with an interesting life story and a self-deprecating manner that showed a level of vulnerability I wasn't expecting. I'd recommend this to anyone but the most prudish.

That was soo real and great! David Spade is truly a one of a kind. I loved how he incorporated all of the aspects of his struggle to the top while keeping it real. The friends that were true or not. He showed a classical respect for the business and in turn proved his superior talent! Dan Richter

Spade definitely has a face for audio books. I kid of course. his voice is good for this, I fully enjoyed this book, and his way of reading it to me. I would put it on a timer, and listen as I was going to sleep. he basically tucked me in. I really appreciate that

Loved the book. Great meaningful stories with signature Spade humor. Audiobooks read by the author are often hit or miss because good authors aren't always good voice talents. In this case, it was perfect.

I am not sold as a fan of David Spade and never seek him out in movies or comedy etc. I am a huge fan of autobiographies which is why I purchased David’s book. It is a good book I like it he is relatable and not trying to impress. It made me laugh a few times (which isn’t easy). I will listen to it again.

This book was so hilarious. I listened to it twice, and could probably listen to it again (I probably will down the line). I've always been a fan of David, but this made me love him even more. It's great being able to actually HEAR him read this, too. I think it gives it a little something extra, (as opposed to just reading the book). Especially love the anecdotes about his life with Chris Farley.
