Summary
NATIONAL BESTSELLER • The gripping story of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos—one of the biggest corporate frauds in history—a tale of ambition and hubris set amid the bold promises of Silicon Valley, rigorously reported by the prize-winning journalist. With a new Afterword.

“Chilling ... Reads like a thriller ... Carreyrou tells [the Theranos story] virtually to perfection.” —The New York Times Book Review

In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion. There was just one problem: The technology didn’t work. Erroneous results put patients in danger, leading to misdiagnoses and unnecessary treatments. All the while, Holmes and her partner, Sunny Balwani, worked to silence anyone who voiced misgivings—from journalists to their own employees.

This book is outstanding! I had no idea about how deep the fraud went. Holmes is a sociopath. She lied until the bitter end. She belongs in JAIL.

A few friends told me that this was a book not to miss! You can’t help but see the parallel between Elizabeth’s lack of morals and our current political situation. I can’t imagine what it would be like to be Elizabeth’s lawyer and have your ruthless ways exposed at the end of your “successful” career!

This real story is just, unbelievable, and this book perfectly illustrated every key point that made this company a 2 bit flea circus. Great narrator as well. If you own a business especially a manufacture business you can wince every time this company fucks up which’s is every 2 mins. Read this book you won’t be sorry!

Interesting how really smart people can be conned. I hope American Greed does a show on this. I hope Elizabeth Holmes goes to prison, I read she has been charged &/or indicted

Amazing! One of the most comprehensively researched books I’ve read or heard lately and given all the secrecies around the subjected company I feel that the author really needs recognition, money well spent. I highly recommend this book.

Very interesting how dishonesty lying and fraud are so rampant in business and our present political arena. Book was well read.

It didn’t feel like a story as much as a legal deposition. The narrator’s voice being so monotone didn’t help either.

Well documented and researched. Sociopaths are among us. This book follows the lengths that someone would go for money, fame and power. Sad. Great read, great narration. Well done.

Outstanding book and investigation. Amazing how many powerful people were fooled and continued to believe even after the lies became clear. This person should be in jail simply for never bothering to apologize to all the people she hurt or to admit once that she was wrong.

Very well written but not a multitask book. There are many parts and characters. Had to back up a lot. Family.
