Summary
Widely regarded as Dickens's masterpiece, Bleak House centers on the generations-long lawsuit Jarndyce and Jarndyce, through which 'whole families have inherited legendary hatreds.' Focusing on Esther Summerson, a ward of John Jarndyce, the novel traces Esther's romantic coming-of-age and, in classic Dickensian style, the gradual revelation of long-buried secrets, all set against the foggy backdrop of the Court of Chancery. Mixing romance, mystery, comedy, and satire, Bleak House limits the suffering caused by the intricate inefficiency of the law.

Excellent narration by David Case. With a voice made for english literature. Notice how he assumes different peoples voices in the narration. All done by himself! What talent he had! He is informally known as have recorded more audiobooks than anyone else. They should have awarded him a grammy for lifetime achievement. Check out his work narrating Joseph Conrad "Heart of Darkness".

Really hard to get into at first. Thought I wasn't going to finish, but soon I found myself getting interested in the characters and their stories.

To start, I really enjoy Charles Dickens. However, this was by far the worst book he ever authored. It was nearly impossible to have any sympathies toward any of the characters. The narration of the minutae of their daily lives droned on endlessly. If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be "insufferable."

The voice of the narrator was so annoyingly pompous that I cringed everytime the disk started playing. However, I forced myself to listen through not just one, but almost 3 CDs before I gave up and sent the horrible thing back. As a lawyer, I have to read dull stuff all the time, but this story was simply unbearable. The dry, dated story in combination with the narrator's voice make this a book to pass up.
