Summary
DON’T MISS BRIDGE OF CLAY, MARKUS ZUSAK’S FIRST NOVEL SINCE THE BOOK THIEF.

The extraordinary #1 New York Times bestseller that is now a major motion picture, Markus Zusak's unforgettable story is about the ability of books to feed the soul.

Nominated as one of America's best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read.

When Death has a story to tell, you listen.

It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still.

Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement.

In superbly crafted writing that burns with intensity, award-winning author Markus Zusak, author of I Am the Messenger, has given us one of the most enduring stories of our time.

“The kind of book that can be life-changing.” —The New York Times

“Deserves a place on the same shelf with The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank.” —USA Today

I loved this book. I am not a big fan of revisionist history but this is different. It is adding to our understanding of the “enemy” in those days. This book is adolescent at times, even elementary, but that abandonment of conventions is brilliant. A book should be delivered to the reader in a manner that opens there mind without requiring a PhD to catch up.

It's sad, it's haunting, but a story I will keep with me always. I could not stop until I finished. The narrating was flawless. I do think I would like to read this book in paper as well, but the narrating in the audio was perfection.

Incredible book, incredible telling. Definitely a classic

Profile Avatar Amanda C. Aug 2021

I loved this book from start to finish. It gives a good look at WWII from German’s point of view.

Profile Avatar Geoffrey Henderson Aug 2021

Great narrator! I was worried because there were a couple of narrators to choose from so I chose at random, choose this one! His german accent is fantastic and the voices he uses for each character help me identify more with each character, usually I lose who is who pretty easily. The book is also fantastic, incredibly powerful story and well written. The characters feel real and the writing is unique, it pulls you in visually incredibly well.

Thoroughly enjoyed The Book Thief! Also enjoyed the narration very much. Told from an interesting point of view, I found the book to be a well written beautiful story. It is full of color and offers an important perspective on WWII Germany. Would recommend to teens and adults alike. Words have power and the words in this book may just plant a seed of kindness!

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2018

It's an good book but I feel like the narrator isn't very expressive and could get boring at times but is still a good book to listen to.

I don't know what I was expecting but it wasn't this book. It took me a bit to get into ... then I did. Excellent writing! Excellent narration! Terrific story! I felt as if I were there as the story unfolded. A different view of Germany during WWII. Felt emotional at the end. Will "read" again.

I had to get nearly halfway through before it finally got my interest. It is worth reading, though. The narrator is absolutely perfect for the role with his accent and voices. I often forgot my own surroundings and found myself on Himmel St with Liesel and Rudy.

A wonderful story. The narrator has the voice of a story teller. He spins his web and gently sucks you in to the story. You totally forget that you are listening to a book on tape...you feel his presence and, like a child, are transported to another world. Wonderful!!!
