Unabridged Audiobook
Dr. Fung's 2018 statement (Medium, "Beyond the Somatic Mutation Theory of Cancer") that "By 2009, it was clear that the somatic mutation theory (SMT) — that cancer was simply a random collection of genetic mutations — was leading exactly nowhere" is laughable, both in over-simplifying the SMT as a "random collection" of mutations rather than mutations in specific pathways, and in claiming could lead nowhere. It's irresponsible for Dr. Fung to claim that approach cancer as a genetic approach is overrated when we've *never been allowed* by the FDA to try the sensible genetic approach: to genotype an individual patient's tumor and devise a personalized gene therapy for that unique cancer. It's also irresponsible for Dr. Fung to blame the high price of drugs on pharmaceutical companies, instead of on the absurd price and irrational requirements for FDA approval, and on the Americans who call for such an iron-hand approach to "protect" them from having to make their own decisions. Re. the atavistic theory vs. the somatic selection theory, a large fraction of cancers include mutations disabling checkpoints of the eukaryotic cell cycle. This means they aren't carrying out a program from pre-eukaryotic ancestors; they're carrying out the cell cycle program from eukaryotic ancestors.
