Summary
A big novel about a small town...

When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.

Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils...Pagford is not what it first seems.

And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations?

A big novel about a small town, The Casual Vacancy is J.K. Rowling's first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other.
Reviews

Excellent book and I was a bit surprised at just how good it was. I wondered if J.K. Rowling would be able to successfully cross genres- she has and this is a good book. Defiantly not for kids - you will not find a single magical reference anywhere in these pages, and yet this is still a wonderfully written, well plotted story. Narration is great also - this audiobook is well worth a listen.

This book was difficult to get into and it was not until I was about halfway done when I got interested in the story. I read this book mainly because it was by J. K. Rowling and I was only slightly disappointed. I do not regret reading this book, I just think that it could have been a little more interesting. As for the narration, it was done really well.

Very different from the author. It was still a good slice of any town.. and life.

I'm sorry but I couldn't get into this book. It never got my interest. I could not finish it. Can't recommend it.

Book narration stopped mid sentence, only halfway through the book. Great disappointment!

Great book! Looks like Rowling genre has crossed over. I'm glad too since I'm looking forward to reading more of her works. The work is slow and deliberate and reaches a climax at the end with all of the characters coming together. So bravo, JK! Turns out you're an author of many things. Can't wait to read more!

If you thrive on other peoples miseries (Adultery, suicide, teenage sex, self inflicted cutting, homosexuality, town gossip, child abuse, etc.) then you'll like this book. Otherwise, absolute waste of time!

I gave up after 90 minutes because nothing of interest occurred in all that time.
