Summary
The city of Voortyashtan was once the home of the goddess of death, war and destruction, but now it's little more than a ruin. General Turyin Mulaghesh is called out of retirement and sent to this hellish place to find a Saypuri secret agent who's gone AWOL in the middle of a mission. But the ghosts of past wars have followed her there, and soon she begins to wonder what happened to the souls in the afterlife when the gods were defeated by her people, the Polis. Do the dead sleep soundly in the land of death? Or do they have plans of their own?

These books are so good. Amazing world building and character development. Like the first one it's a bit of a murder mystery, a bit of a political thriller, and a bit of a sci-fy novel. And I love the narrator. No complaints about any of her voicings. In fact, I'm debating buying the third audiobook despite already owning a physical copy, just because I've enjoyed the narrated version so much. You don't absolutely have to have read the first book to enjoy this one, but it definitely helps you to understand the world history, the social backdrop, and the characters' motivations.

Another excellent book. Seriously, the trilogy is worth the read and the focus character is just awesome. A lot of my previous complaints about the narrator have more or less been ironed out, but I still hate her voice for Sigrid. It's truly absurd how unintelligent her voice for him makes him seem. I always imagined a Clancy Brown voice for him... not a halting, faux Russian, William Shatner.
