Summary
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • COMING SOON TO APPLE TV+ • A “mind-blowing” (Entertainment Weekly) speculative thriller about an ordinary man who awakens in a world inexplicably different from the reality he thought he knew—from the author of Upgrade, Recursion, and the Wayward Pines trilogy

“Are you happy with your life?”

Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the kidnapper knocks him unconscious.

Before he awakens to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.

Before a man he’s never met smiles down at him and says, “Welcome back, my friend.”

In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college professor but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.

Is it this life or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how will Jason make it back to the family he loves?

From the bestselling author Blake Crouch, Dark Matter is a mind-bending thriller about choices, paths not taken, and how far we’ll go to claim the lives we dream of.

I listened to the audiobook of Dark Matter, which seems to alter your opinion of the book. I liked it. I personified a conundrum. If you don't like philosophical questions that don't have right or wrong answers, then you won't like Dark Matter.

I was so wildly disappointed by the ending of this book. We see our main character be only concerned with his wife and kid, be selfless the WHOLE BOOK, and then makes a last minute decision that goes so against his character. Sloppy, bad writing to get an ending the author wanted, but the character would have never chosen. I feel robbed!

I thought the book was very well written and listened even at home rather than only in my car. I've read several of the author's books and found this one to be one of the best. It would make a great movie. My only criticism is of the final chapters which doesn't seem to flow quite as well as earlier ones. A little disappointed in the ending.

I’m pleasantly surprised. This is my first Blake Crouch book (audiobook)and I’ll be getting another soon. I think Crouch is very talented. He had a very good idea and turned it into a very good book. I was feeling everything in this book. Mainly anxiety later on as things got really crazy. Definitely worth the read or listen.

As I keep saying with anything Blake Crouch writes, it’s mind boggling but yet still seems real enough to relate to. Makes my mind spin and think of how our future lives will look and what we are truly capable of. Highly recommend

It took me a minute to get into it but once I did I was hooked! It’s really good and I’m excited for the limited series adaptation they’re making.

Dark Matter is fast-moving, full of surprises, a great science fiction thriller. It makes one think about the roads not taken in one’s life and would they have become a different person. Plus I love the science. I’ll read book this again someday.

This book would probably make a pretty good movie, but as a book it really didn't excite me or keep my interest all that much. Although the plot was interesting, the storyline just seemed too contrived and dull. Great narration.

Great story. It was a lot more complex than what it looked like at first. Very well narrated.

I had this book on my "to read" list for a long time. I found it recommended on a list of thrilling scifi stories. It was only "meh" and completely lacked a "thrill" for me. I was never able to sympathize with the protagonist and there was a lack of character development with the supporting cast. The 15-year-old was unbelievable. It needed a lot more show and a lot less tell. The ending fell very flat because of this. The narrator was good with the material.

A spiritual primer about choice disguised as a popular thriller. Ok!Most of it excellent – I was very entertained as I was educated – learned a lot!

Worth listening to. Neither the narration nor the book itself were perfect but both were good. I enjoyed listening to it. I'm kind of annoyed by the assumption that people can't have wildly successful careers and be parents at the same time but whatever. The second 2/3s of the book I found to be quite superior to the first 1/3 so if you don't see what all the fuss is about at first, keep going!

I really enjoyed the book. I felt it went on a little too much in the middle where they are traversing the various realities, but it was still a compelling story. Well written and well narrated. I only wish the end had a little more closure.

The story centers around timely research going on right now on the topic of dark matter. The characters were real and of the story pulled me in. I usually listen while driving, but this grabbed me so hard I continue listening after I got home. At least twice I was certain I had figured out how it would end, Only to have the author twist me around and surprise me time after time. I highly recommend this read. The narration was good, and he brought all the characters to life, both male and female. I rated him four stars instead of five, due to a little pause after certain letter combinations. This probably would not bother anyone but me.

This is definitely worth a listen! The beginning is a little slow but as the story moves forward it becomes very interesting. Its the kind of story that makes you feel so small in comparison to large and infinite world the author created. The suspense felt urgent during many parts of the story so it keeps you on a bit of a roller coaster It was great from start to finish. I can easily see this turning into a movie.

This was an interesting book, and kept me hooked till the end. The only thing that was strange for me was when the narrator was raising his voice when he was saying female lines. His urgency was a bit overkill but aligned with the text.

I enjoyed Dark Matter very much. I thought the author successfully weaved a situation where the reader/listener doesn't want the story to end. I will read this author again. The narrator does an excellent job!
