Summary
The New York Times bestselling author of The Rose Code returns with an unforgettable World War II tale of a quiet librarian who becomes history’s deadliest female sniper. Based on a true story.

In the snowbound city of Kiev, wry and bookish history student Mila Pavlichenko organizes her life around her library job and her young son—but Hitler’s invasion of Russia sends her on a different path. Given a rifle and sent to join the fight, Mila must forge herself from studious girl to deadly sniper—a lethal hunter of Nazis known as Lady Death. When news of her three hundredth kill makes her a national heroine, Mila finds herself torn from the bloody battlefields of the eastern front and sent to America on a goodwill tour.

Still reeling from war wounds and devastated by loss, Mila finds herself isolated and lonely in the glittering world of Washington, DC—until an unexpected friendship with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and an even more unexpected connection with a silent fellow sniper offer the possibility of happiness. But when an old enemy from Mila’s past joins forces with a deadly new foe lurking in the shadows, Lady Death finds herself battling her own demons and enemy bullets in the deadliest duel of her life.

Based on a true story, The Diamond Eye is a haunting novel of heroism born of desperation, of a mother who became a soldier, of a woman who found her place in the world and changed the course of history forever.

Didn't absolutely love it, but it was good.

Excellent book. I couldn’t stop listening. It was even more interesting since it was about a real person.

Well researched but too much time spent on guns and war.

This is my second book by Kate Quinn. Sometimes when I love the first work by an author I’m somewhat disappointed with the second. This was definitely not the case here. After being blown away by The Alice Network I was equally enthralled by The Diamond Eye. I especially appreciated the authors notes at the end of the book which explains her thinking and process in creating this work as well as outline what was factual and what she added to round out the work. Ki will definitely explore more of this gifted authors work.

Hard to put down adventure with wonderful characters and lots of action. It made me research the real lady sniper.

Amazing story. It was hard for me to believe that this woman really existed. I’m not in to guns and shooting so it wasn’t my favorite book.

Enjoyed it a lot, was a 5-star until the end, which seemed rather hastily wrapped up and left a couple major issues unaddressed. Still, I recommend it and good narration, especially the female parts.

This was very interesting, the fact that this actually happen makes the story even more amazing. This part of history is rarely told.

Fascinating, and made even more so by the fact that so much of it is true. But it felt like it dragged at times.

It just didn’t work for me. More a love story than a historical novel. Ms Quinn has a great following and this was the first of her books I’ve read.

Fact weaved with fiction to make an extremely interesting and educational story. There are authors notes at the end to explain the truths within the novel and the poetic licenses taken. A tribute to woman of the war, and refreshing to hear it from a Russian perspective. I recommend this novel, and will search for more by this author. Really well read.

Exceptional story- all the more so because it was true. It gave me a much more nuanced view of history, women's enduring fight for equality, and warfare. The narrator was fantastic. I could not put it down. I listened in every spare moment, and a lot of moments that I really didn't have to spare.
