Summary
Have you ever wondered what happened to Cinderella after she married the prince? Have you ever asked yourself if it was really "happy ever after?" Actually, in this Victorian melodrama, it's not. 35-years-old Emily Fox-Seton, quite penniless and a little lonely, saves herself from becoming an old maid by agreeing to a marriage proposal from the marquess of Walderhurst, thus becoming "one of the richest Marchionesses in England". She is naïve, kind and good. She doesn't believe that people are really willing to hurt her, but why are all these strange accidents happening? This novel is divided into 2 parts. The first, "The Making Of A Marchioness" tells about the odd courtship of Emily and lord Walderhurst. The second part, "The Methods of Lady Walderhurst", most of the book, tells what happens after… This adult fairy tale, which, by mistakes, becomes a realistic novel, is a captivating book. I wish you all a wonderful reading. (Summary by Stav Nisser)

A wonderful trip back to the old days with plenty of atmosphere and a narrator perfect for the subject matter. Thanks to all involved!

Excellent narration.

Long and drawn out, predictable, unrealistic, and over-romanticised story, but still charming, poetic, and full of superior language and vocabulary - a product of it's time. If you like old books then you'll probably enjoy this one.

A marvellous story built out an ordinary fairy tale plot. The characters’ thoughts and feelings were explored sympathetically, but with a much more rigorous lens than most authors manage. Their personal growth unfurled within the bounds of their explicitly described individual limitations, but nonetheless the story was a skilful exposition of the human condition. I really did not expect to find the ‘hero’ had a mind and temperament that was “inelastic”, or to have the ‘heroine’ described as a person with “no imagination”. The narration was truly excellent. I really enjoyed listening to the telling, so grateful thanks to the narrator for taking the time and trouble!

Such an interesting story of beauty and ugliness, cruelty and kindness . Tremendously written and so well narrated.

This book has everything. Love, drama, devoted friends. The narrator made the dated reading thoroughly interesting.

I like Frances Hodgson Burnett Children’s book a lot but just a few months ago I discovered she had written adult books too and have been enjoying every book I have found of her so far. Narrator did a nice job!

Oh! What a fascinating book. I had no idea that Frances Hodgson Burnett wrote such books for adults. I only knew the children’s books. Emily Fox-Seton is a lovely girl. And even though the descriptions of her constantly extolled her lovely character, it did not pall because, like everyone around her, a reader fell in love with her. And from the very unselfish way she showed love and respect to those around her, knew she should have to have good things come her way. So, when questioning things started happening to her, somehow you wished someone should come to protect her. It was very hard to put the book down...especially in the second part of the story. I would recommend the book highly, especially if you like period books. Keep the tissues near you in the last parts of the book! The person who narrated was just the person to read the book. She was able to keep interest as well as to speak in dialect and character. I would definitely listen to other books she has narrated.
