Summary
Since the 1970s, FantasticLand has been the theme park where “Fun is Guaranteed!” But when a hurricane ravages the Florida coast and isolates the park, the employees find it anything but fun. Five weeks later, the authorities who rescue the survivors encounter a scene of horror. Photos soon emerge online of heads on spikes outside of rides and viscera and human bones littering the gift shops, breaking records for hits, views, likes, clicks, and shares. How could a group of survivors, mostly teenagers, commit such terrible acts?

Presented as a fact-finding investigation and a series of first-person interviews, FantasticLand pieces together the grisly series of events. Park policy was that the mostly college-aged employees surrender their electronic devices to preserve the authenticity of the FantasticLand experience. Cut off from the world and left on their own, the teenagers soon form rival tribes who viciously compete for food, medicine, social dominance, and even human flesh. This new social network divides the ravaged dreamland into territories ruled by the Pirates, the ShopGirls, the Freaks, and the Mole People. If meticulously curated online personas can replace private identities, what takes over when those constructs are lost?

FantasticLand is a modern take on Lord of the Flies meets Battle Royale that probes the consequences of a social civilization built online.

Truly one of the most interesting audiobooks I’ve listened to in the last four years. It is unlike any story I’ve ever heard, as it told through sets of interviews. I was worried interviews would rehash the same plot ideas over and over again, but each interview adds a little more to the story-and does it beautifully. By changing narrators for every interview it really keeps a listener engaged. I legitimately couldn’t stop listening, I finished the entire thing in two days. The story is interesting, parts make your jaw drop, and at it’s core, it is down right creepy.

Amazing story that kept me riveted! I love not being able to guess what happened next and I was surprised, shocked, wowed at every turn. Narrators were fantastic and made you feel you were listening to a documentary rather than a fiction novel.

Written in a style similar to World War Z (an oral history), this book grabs hold of you at the beginning and never lets go! It’s almost hard to believe that the unbelievable events described in the novel DIDN’T happen, so realistic are the descriptions. I “read” the book’s audio-book version, and the voice actors are all top-notch.

I actually really liked this book. Fast-paced, interesting structure, excellent narration. Not really scary, but definitely creepy, suspenseful, and thought-provoking. Also, there is no sexual violence - hooray! I hate when horror/thriller writers use rape as a plot device. That is not entertainment. Kudos to the author on avoiding that cliche.

wasn't sure I would enjoy this book at first. But enjoy it I did, probably going to listen again to pick up what I missed since I listened at work the first time.

I got a little annoyed with the female narrator. And the book was a little frustrating at first. But it's a book you can read again.

Frim the moment this book started, I was hooked. Dont let the idea of it being told by interviews detour you. You are put right into Fantasticland! So good ive lostened to it twice.
