Summary
“Entirely satisfying, an expert balance of warmth and compassion, terrific supporting characters, a little steamy sex and just enough suspense to keep you from guessing how it will all go down.” — Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A hilarious novel about one woman’s quest to redo an old house . . . and her life, as only New York Times bestseller Mary Kay Andrews can tell it.

After her boss in a high-powered Washington public relations firm is caught in a political scandal, fledgling lobbyist Dempsey Jo Killebrew is left unemployed and broke. Out of options, she reluctantly accepts her father’s offer to help refurbish Birdsong, the old family place he recently inherited in Guthrie, Georgia. All it will take, he tells her, is a little paint and some TLC to turn the fading Victorian mansion into a real-estate cash cow.

But when she arrives, Dempsey realizes that “Bird Droppings” would more aptly describe the moldering Pepto Bismol–pink dump with duct-taped windows and a driveway full of junk. There’s also a murderously grumpy old lady, one of Dempsey’s distant relations, who has claimed squatter’s rights and isn’t moving out. Ever.

Everyone in Guthrie seems to know Dempsey’s business, from a smooth-talking real-estate agent to a cute lawyer who owns the local paper. As if that's not bad enough, pesky FBI agents keep showing up on her doorstep, looking for information about her ex-boss.

All Dempsey can do is roll up her sleeves and get to work. Before long, what started as a job of necessity somehow becomes a labor of love and, ultimately, a journey that takes her to a place she never expected—back home.

I got to about the 9th hour of this book when I couldn't take it anymore. The story has many stories within the main story although I'm not sure what that exactly was--what it the romance, the court case, the story with the old lady, with her parents???? The book also had way too many references to lables--starbucks, Milano's, Michael Jackson....and on and on. I thought that the author was hoping for an endorsement from a company or one of the people she named in the book. It was beyond silly! This book drags on and on and could have been wrapped up so much earlier. I also found the main character to be stupid to the point that the mess she was in became unbelievable. She's top of her law school class and the things she found herself in were unbelieveable. Lastly, she was supposed to be in her late 20's and the narrator could not pull that age off in her narration or her voice. I found myself not wanting to hear the book and then recalled why I joined Audiobooks --to enjoy listening to books. That's when I hit delete. Sorry but this book is a pass!

I totally loved this and ALL of Mary Kay Andrews’ books. I was formally traveling 1-1/2 hours daily and started downloading her books. Some of them start out a little iffy, in my opinion, but I’ve loved all of them. Not sure once I get thru all her books what I’ll listen to next. Now that I’m not traveling any longer I still download and listen every day. Some of her books are laugh out loud funny. And Ella Kate, what a hoot she was for sure. My only issue was how quickly the 2 characters jumped into bed and in the end got engaged. Not very realistic but still enjoyed this book. I am now reading Deep Dish and love this one as well.

Another great book from Mary Kay Andrews. I really enjoy the southern novels. I takes me to place that I feel no longer exsists yet it does.
