Unabridged Audiobook
DeMille could not have written this. He is a wonderful author and this was written by a third grader.
I could not get through more than a few CDs before I had to send it back. I have a long commute and must have something to listen to but this was painful. The main character is an oversexed elitist with a sense of entitlement. Nothing made me connect with or like the character at all. I love a well written book no matter what the subject....do not love this one!
This was very disappointing. Very boring and not what I expected at all.
ND wrote this book to be like 'classic literature' according to the interview at the end of the CDs. For me, the book was disappointing, as I was expecting the same type of suspense as his other books I've read, and kept waiting for the excitement which never came. While I did find appreciate some of the dark humor of the main character, I agreed with another writer who indicated that he and his wife were such unlikable characters that it's difficult to really care what happened to them.
Agree with Tom a little, the previous reviewer. But, it is DeMille's BEST WORK. Mafia, wealthy WASP's, rich and powerful as well as regular working stiffs. Everyone has a piece of this. Sarcasm was a bit much, but it played out well and I feel it was a necessary component for this novel to work out well in the end. One of the drawbacks was the fact that they focused too much on the parents and the sale/rental of their home to Arabic people. Cut to the chase. The Lion/Plum Island were #2 and #3 in my ratings of all of DeMille's novels thus far.
FIrst off this is one great author; that's why I was looking forward to this book. He paints great pictures but two things I don't like 1 - the pace of action is very slow and 2- the protagonist makes absolutely too many sarcastic asides, voicing what is in his mind to us first then saying something else to the character. Just too many "wise-cracks" some of which come off but many do not. The reader is good and easy to listen to. Too many facets of the stories are repeated.
I am a huge fan of DeMille buy was somewhat disappointed by this novel. I enjoyed it and listened to it intently but I had higher expectations for it. The story is excellent but it has too much development and not enough action for me. If you liked the first book to this sequel you will enjoy this story. If you didn't read the first one, don't start here.
Nelson DeMille consistently delivers in each of his novels, and The Gate House doesn't dissapoint. It's witty, well written, with characters you care about and believe. The main chracter reminds us of our own little quirks, of our own hidden thoughts on how we see the world and respond to it,even when we don't always express it. Just another winner from the author of Up Country, Wildfire and so many others. A winner!
Awesome book. I've never listen to a book so long that never bored me at times. This was a great listen all the way through. Humor, Romance and Suspence. John Sutter's wit kept me going thrugh the whole book. Nineteen CD's and well worth it.
