This story is from the book the Happy Prince and other Stories. In these tales, most of them being sad and even very sad, Oscar Wilde looks for a way to save one's soul in front of the misery of the world. In these tales the character will manage to obtain their salvation from their upper class blindness, by opening their eyes to misery and suffering and by doing what they can to repair these pains and evils.

What a truly wonderful story. The narrator is clear and tells the story with such feeling.

I know this is a classic but I could barely get through it

Story was delightful but the narration was awful. No change in tone, hardly any gaps between sentences order paragraphs.

I thoroughly enjoyed this short story rather enlightening and even through the moral is straight forward it hit home and still provokes thought and reflection in this day and age

It is totally ridiculous to have an American reading Oscar Wilde! He will be turning in his grave !

Profile Avatar Anonymous Mar 2020

Not much-not what I expected. Only listened to 5 mins. Sorry Oscar.

Good

The story itself is a little sad in context and after the sparrow does the first good deed for the happy little prince, the next deeds are predictable. As both the sparrow and the prince give all that they have, which seems a sad ending, the redeeming virtue is that they earn a place in heaven because of the love they have for others.

Wonderful short story, I might try to find another narrator though. This one didn't do the story justice according to me.

Very interesting short story, little blunt at the end but narrator manages to keep you hooked and I will definitely remember this story. Swallow, swallow, little swallow! Won't you stay one night longer?

Ugh. I once read that "sentimentality is the pornography of the intellect," with which I concur. This work, then, is the hardcore version. Sappy, drippy, yuck. Sure, the politics are to be expected (rich people bad, poor people good) and no one should mind the idea that it's commendable to do good deeds, but it's hard to see how a feeling of nausea helps one to relate. So, why isn't this only a one-star rating? Well, two stars is my "dumb" or "dull" rating. To get one star, a work has to be actively disgusting--racist (right-wing or left-wing versions), scatalogical, insulting, anti-family, anti-rationality, etc. The narrator was not bad, but an inexcusable mispronunciation of "Sans Souci" loses a star. Skip this one, unless you're a Wilde completist.

This narrator was perfect. He did not overdo the characters. His natural recitation gave room for metaphors to drift in between the words and lines. Very pleasant listen.

I enjoyed listening to this Oscar Wilde story.. brought me back to the fairy tales I used to read as a kid. It was a pleasant hour or so on a sunny afternoon and a nice get away from our current news...

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2020

Great story. The narrator could be better.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2020

I liked it it was fun.

Profile Avatar Llaypo Jun 2020

Nice story

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jun 2020

Very poor narration, which ruined the story for me. -not enough variation in tone, no attempt to make the voices different, stresses were often in the wrong places and sentences were often almost run into each other. I also was very irritated by having an American voice reading a very English text, but perhaps that was just a personal prejudice. I would so much rather have been reading it, so it was not the relaxing enjoyable experience I had hoped for.

It is a lovely and poignant story that is read well. This is a book that should be read as well as heard. It is quite poetic and visual. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Profile Avatar Ann T. Apr 2020

Enjoyed this

Profile Avatar Anonymous Apr 2020

Great story, took a few minutes to settle into the narration, but glad I stuck with it. At first I thought it was read by a computer as some of the words didn’t seem to read at the right pace but then it even out & I was able to enjoy it. Excellent, especially as it was free. Thank you very much.

Book quite interesting, but narration very labored - might just have been suitable for a child.
