Summary
This classic tale of intrigue, mystery and adventure takes place on the ivory harvesting and trade route in the Congo, in the depths of Africa. In this book, Marlow, a sea captain on a ship at anchor, retells a story of his assignment upon a steamer ship in the Congo to a group of his ship mates. During his mission he is asked to retrieve and return Kurtz, an ivory hunter with a resounding reputation where ever his name is mentioned, who delivers more ivory than all the other stations combined, and who has a reverenced effect on the natives. Passages and references from the book are sprinkled through other writings and The Heart of Darkness was the base content for the movie Apocalypse Now by Francis Ford Coppola.

I understand this book was the underlying inspiration for Apocolypse Now, which makes total sense. Well worth the time to read.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this classic. It is uncomfortable being reminded of how easily one can slip away into the darkness, given the right circumstances and horrific to be reminded of the potential inhumanity of man in the pursuit of personal or national goals. But it is wise to know what we are capable of so that we can guard against it in our own personal and national lives

I found myself engaged from beginning to end. Beautiful writing and well told

What I didn't get was why the narrator admired Kurtz so much. I didn't hear much about the man.

Profile Avatar Anonymous Jul 2020

The narration was rather flat so I kept finding that I had been distracted from the story

What just happened? I understood this about as much as I understood Apocalypse Now- which wasn’t much.

it is OK book

Having read the paperback version some 20 years ago, it was nice to return to Heart of Darkness on audiobook. This is still a powerful story that offers a unique glimpse into a cruel and unforgiving world with the enigmatic Kurtz almost acting as a spectre looming over and haunting a very troubled land. The narrator does a good job but there were a few notable unusual pronunciations with Thames, row and pauper standing out. Still worth listening to.

if I didn't know that it was actually a person reading this, I would have thought it was AI. the narration was awful. avoid

I hate to give a book somebody labored over such a low score, but this book is terrible & I have no idea what these 5 star reviews are talking about. It's 4 hours of a man being bitterly jealous of someone who is far greater & more accomplished than he is, culminating with him paying a visit to the dead man's intended to only to be left more bitterly jealous by the fact that she adored him. The writing also leaves much to be desired, one minute the boat has sunk to the bottom of the river & we're going to be there for months trying to fix it somehow, next paragraph we're halfway down the river. It's just not good. Narrator was, as always, awesome.

I did not like the narrator’s style at all. After listening 30 minutes, I couldn’t continue. The narrator’s intonation did not reflect the emotion of the character’s. It was a forced up and down in expression, that was annoying, consistently fast paced ruthenium and in a monotone wave. Compare the reading to Tom Hanks in Dutch House. No comparison! I should have listened to a preview prior to purchasing it!

Classic book narrated excellently.

an interesting look at the darkest recesses in the human mind.

It just couldn’t keep me engaged. I think it’s the narration. That story should have been a whole lot more captivating than that

Intense drama. It deserves to be a movie. I recommend.

there are some great great passages in this book and it is worth reading for these alone. having said that I did struggle to focus on some of the detail in this book. However I did find the narrative style very unique and like I said particular powerful at times. I did find the narration a little odd, dower and drawn out with a strange intonation. but not sufficiently so to ruin the book.

It was difficult to follow with the narrators toward the end. I stopped listening
