A journalistic masterpiece. John Hersey transports us back to the streets of Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945-the day the city was destroyed by the first atomic bomb. war is cruel and we should be ashamed

I recommend this book as required reading for high school and college students, as it provides first-hand accounts of what six people experienced in Hiroshima the day of the atomic bombing and followed their lives for the next year. A later chapter was added to update their lives 30-40 years later, which is included in this audiobook. I had always heard of this book, written in 1946, and knew the story was about the atomic bomb blast in Hiroshima, but I thought it was a typical historical account. This book allows you to visualize and feel the emotions of the six people who experienced the horrors of a nuclear bomb and effectively makes the reader understand the importance of never allowing it to happen again. The book is short, well-written, and makes me wonder why it hasn't been required reading in schools.

A must read for every human being.

A truly eye opening book, through instant disaster, through overwhelming trauma, people stood up. They took charge to help their fellow citizens through one of our histories most tragic events the people of Hiroshima and Nagasaki endured. A testament to the Japanese people.
