Summary
The Onion’s Baratunde Thurston shares his 30-plus years of expertise in being black, with helpful essays like “How to Be the Black Friend,” “How to Speak for All Black People,” “How To Celebrate Black History Month,” and more, in this satirical guide to race issues—written for black people and those who love them. Audacious, cunning, and razor-sharp, How to Be Black exposes the mass-media’s insidiously racist, monochromatic portrayal of black culture’s richness and variety. Fans of Stuff White People Like, This Week in Blackness, and Ending Racism in About an Hour will be captivated, uplifted, incensed, and inspired by this hilarious and powerful attack on America’s blacklisting of black culture: Baratunde Thurston’s How to Be Black.

This book was very funny. I will say that I didn’t too much care for the poor audio of the interview recordings but the rest was fun and enjoyable. Definitely a good listen. I’ll listen to it again and recommend to others of all races. I initially picked it up because I had to know what he was going to say - race is always an interesting topic. Lessons for me as an African American, don’t take yourself or your race too seriously. Just do you and be proud of what you give.

I didn't agree with most of what the author had to say, but I loved every minute of it. The author's narration was awesome. The concepts were challenging and the author's passion and conviction, jumps off the page or in my case out of my dash. I felt like he had become my "Black Friend" by the middle of the book. While I have wildly different political opinions than the author, he a person I would love to debate. So if you are a fiscal conservative like me, trust me when I say click the button and buy this book. It is a clear presentation of ultra liberalism delivered in a manner and by a person that you will feel comfortable with. He will soothe you through the tough spots and in the end he will have explained many topics, answered many questions, and in my case changed a few opinions. While I finished with my personal political description still well intact, I also felt as if the book not so much changed my mind but challenged me to grow. If you are a driving style audio book person I suggest you listen to this on a trip with someone, it is great to laugh out loud and cry knowing you have someone to share and discuss it with.
