A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by iCarly and Sam & Cat star Jennette McCurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life.

Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income.

In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she is thrust into fame. Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“Hi Gale!”), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer. Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants.

Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, I’m Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.

If you’re bothered by the title and not what she’s been through. You’re part of the problem. This book is her her truth and kudos to her.

There have been so many moments where tears welled in my eyes. It gives it so much more meaning and sadness hearing the words come directly from her mouth. I highly recommend this to absolutely anyone who is considering reading or listening to the book. There is so much emotion and so much depth.

Worth the read :) thank you for being so brave, Jenette! Books like this are so very helpful for me.

She is truly able to capture the chaos and the pain that manifests from childhood abuse. Many justify extreme parenting with disregard to the impact it has on the child. Parents can make mistakes because of their own trauma and it needs to be acknowledged

The title could come across as needlessly provocative, but Jennette's story is nuanced. As much as the story can be sad, it is equally funny, colorful and engaging, thanks to great writing and delivery in this audio form, by McCurdy herself.

This is the first audiobook I listened to in it's entirety. and in a few days time no less. Jennette's reading pace is quite fast but I enjoyed hearing her delivery and impressions. Her memoir is darkly funny and emotionally impactful. I feel like I really got to know the person behind the character I grew up loving. I was shocked but pleasantly surprised with how different Jennette's personality is from how I imagined her to be. I relate a lot to her humorously cynical view of people and the world. I'm glad she's faced her demons and come out on top. I highly recommend you listen to her story especially if you had not so great parents.

Jennette is so brave for speaking out. My whole life surrounding iCarly feels like a lie. She is such a good actor. I had no idea any of that was happening... I'm glad she was able to write a book. It must have been therapeutic to write under her own discretion. I'm sure she has seen it but if not I hope she would watch the Disney movie Tangled. I bet that the mom in Tangled will be eerily familiar.... I noticed you weren't in the commercials I saw for the iCarly Reboot but I never realized what was happening... I respect your decision for not being apart of the new show.

Beautifully moving, a story of healing after trauma and loss. Being narrated by Jennette made it that much more powerful. A book I will truly remember.

Incredible. I wish I could write Jennette herself a message, an I’m so proud of you letter. She deserves one.

At first , when she was reading it I could only see her as “Sam” which she explained in the book and that’s how so many people viewed her . As her story about her life continued I only see her as Jennette now . Not some girl from I Carly. The way she carried herself her whole life , what she did for her family. Speechless. . I loved it , I wish the book was longer , just because hearing about her life and how she was so open about everything. I pray she is doing better . She is such an inspiration. I hope everyone gets a chance to read this book !

Jennette McCurdy is such an amazing author and I’m so glad I decided to listen to her audio book instead of reading it myself. Something about listening to her read the story just feels more personal like a friend telling me their life story, rather than reading about the life story of some celebrity I know nothing about. Such a phenomenal story!

As someone who grew up watching iCarly, this helped me gain a lot more insight into Jennette’s childhood and the challenges she has overcome.

As someone who grew up with a mentally and emotionally abusive mother, and an absent father, she is tremendously brave for facing her past trauma and sharing it with the world.

I couldn't stop listening. Very honest but so sad. I'm so glad her therapist got through to her realizing she was abused. The only thing was there were no funny parts. I only point that out because it's described as hilarious. Not once did I find anything funny.

I didn't know who the author was before (or really even until midway through). I bought the book for the title (we have something in common). But I finished it in two sittings because it was so good & fast paced. Absolutely recommend. Especially if you (like me) had a mentally ill parent and finally, well into adulthood, you realized how bad the abuse was, how weird your childhood was and that you were utterly unprepared for to be a responsible, good person in the world.

I loved this memoir! Growing up as an iCarly fan, it kind of hit harder for me knowing everything that she went through during those years of production. Aside from her experience as an actor, this book was very informative on the importance of mother-daughter relationships in the early stages in life. This is an all around good listen for woman of all ages. Honorable mentions; this is read by Jeannette which makes it an even better listen!

Such a sad book at times and my heart broke for her over and over. I was smiling so big in the end when she started finding her voice and living for her, as she overcame the things she did I was cheering for her in my mind and clapping for her. She’s been heard and I’m so glad I got to know Jennette’s story, Jennettes life.

I really liked that she narrated this herself. No one else would have been able to capture her thoughts anyway. Only complaint I have is that she did read really fast and so some words felt skipped over that I wasn’t sure what she had just said. Also seemed very monotoned. I know that’s her voice on the regular but it almost sounded as if she just really didnt want to be reading it. And again, maybe that’s just how she felt. It’s a hard story to tell, so I get it either way.

It's a good book. But I hate to say you can catch every highlight of this book in any interview she's done in the last year so you don't really have to spend money if you don't have to. I respect her journey, I really truly do and I mean no disrespect as I make my critique. You won't get a story you haven't heard 1000 times from any child Hollywood star. It's sad and I like that McCurdy is shedding more light on the problems with Hollywood and the pressures of being famous no matter what the motive. But she constantly goes on like she's the only one that goes through what she's been through. I also related in the way that I took grew up wanting to constantly please my mother even when she didn't always deserve that loyalty. 3 stars because it has a good formula and it's relatable. It's no masterpiece but it is well written. She brushes over experiences but I feel like we miss A LOT of details. Then she dives into some completely gross and unnecessary details...I get why, it's just still unnecessary. I don't feel this way or that about Jeanette Mccurdy personally. I'm not a fan and I don't hate her. So with complete unbiasness she is a TERRIBLE narrator. She reads like a 15 year old that's capable of reading fluently out loud but lacks the skill of a professional narrator. While she doesn't get monotoned, there are parts she rushes over through like she's running out of breath, and places she should pause where she doesn't. I get that it's her story to tell so maybe she should have told it like she was telling us her story and not just reading lines off a page. You know? Kudos to her though from making something of herself when the odds where against her. There is something to respect in her and while I did enjoy the book I could have easily looked over this one and never missed a thing.

I was not sure what to expect when I started this book. It was mainly just background noise as I was sewing. However, this book was exceptionally eye opening and heartbreaking. I do not know the author's career via television or musically. I have since looked up her television show and music videos. It is saddening to hear how much pain she sent through. This is a must read

I couldn’t get into this book and never got there. I recognize and appreciate the importance of Jennette sharing her story. I’m sorry she experienced all the horrible things she did. But I think the book was repetitive, not that well written, and I just didn’t like it as much as everyone else seems to. It’s nice that she read it herself though, and my heart is so sad for her.

Profile Avatar
Asher P.

Absolutely riveting. McCurdy is incredibly talented, and hearing her read it brings about a depth and level of emotion that wouldn't have been possible with any other narrator.

Profile Avatar
Roean A.

So heavy but oh my GOD so good. Love that this is read by Jennette, hearing the emotion in her voice as she reads this diary-style narrative just translates so much better than if someone else read it.

Profile Avatar
Alyssa E.

Such a compelling book and Jennette reads it with such passion. I listened to it on my commute this week and she reads so emphatically that it kept my attention, some audiobooks begin to sound so stale that it’s easy to zone out from it while driving but that did not happen with this book. I grew up with a disabled mother and struggled with an eating disorder in my teens and early twenties, not to the severity that Jennette did but this book helped me a lot. I was able to recognize many similarities between her mother and mine and was able to pinpoint instances from my own life that had always felt “off” or uncomfortable as toxic and narcissistic behaviors that her mother used to guide her behavior. Jennette put into words the feelings that I had as a child and young adult that I couldn’t or wouldn’t verbalize. I found the book cathartic and entertaining, not in a haha way but in the way that someone else’s experiences that mirror your own can make you feel less alone, more seen, and hopeful. 10/10 Highly recommend!

I appreciate that she wrote this book and so honestly. I didn't know who she was, more than anything this shows the abuse of children by the film industry. The authors voice and speed of telling the story was at times difficult to feel and understand, maybe too matter of fact when the fact was the lack of emotion, but that could be her truth, which is sad, but then the story is sad.

When I read the title I already had a good idea what this book would be about, a troubled childhood and forced life because of a toxic mother. Jennette truly is a good writer and touched me with her book and it was more than just a troubled childhood. Seeing how she was as Sam in Icarly, I can’t imagine how hard it was for her to play a character in love with food while having an eating disorder. She opened my eyes to some of my own personal struggles I’ve been avoiding and I really hope she writes more books.

First of all I was very impressed with her recall. I can barely remember things that have happened in adulthood, much less that far back into childhood. I had kind of a rough childhood and being a child of an alcoholic a lot of the behavior resonates. Don't want to give too much away, but the title is misleading on a surface level. The book is about the internal struggle she has dealing with a self absorbed lunatic that she loves very much. Children of alcoholics become "pleasers" and negotiators just to maintain the peace. Although alcoholism isn't the driver here it looks familiar. There are parts about her fan interactions that made me feel like she was an ungrateful brat. I know people can be rude and annoying and have no respect for boundaries. So I get it on that level. But there are also sincere impressionable young people that loved her and her character, even though that's a whole other issue with celebrity worship. But ultimately it comes through that she didn't ask for any of it, and I really can't blame her for her apathy. I think she would have enjoyed having a fulfilling music career. She has a sarcastic sense of humor, which I happen to like and she has some pretty good zingers in here that made me laugh. It's also a story of the Hollywood meat grinder that uses these kids and spits them out. That's in addition to the normal backstabbing egocentric culture that's already there. One disadvantage I have is that I was only exposed to the show because it was on 24 hour loop on our TV for a time, so I can't really identify some of the players that she doesn't name. I assume some are pseudonyms. I knew about the "creator" before this so I knew what was going on there. So all in all this was a book I enjoyed. I really hope she's in a better place these days and is able to find happiness.

This was such a great book! I absolutely hate reading but don’t mind listening to books and this was the perfect choice! I really appreciate Jennette speaking her POV of life as a child actor. I’m so sorry that she went through what she went through, but glad she is overcoming and learning herself more each day.

It was ok. I definitely feel for her and her journey. Her mom really was a piece of work, but there was something off about it I didn't enjoy. Maybe if I read it and didn't listen to it I would have enjoyed it more.

Great story of authors life as a child actor with an abusive mother who teaches her to have an eating disorder. Good book for someone with an eating disorder, or someone who loves them, to read. I tried turning down the speed of the narrator/author as it was so quick, but it distorted her voice. The pace of the reading is distracting from the good read.

My kids grew up on icarly & Sam & Kat, so I was interested in knowing Jeanette a little better. Plus - the title. It was interesting but a little lacking in depth. The narration was in her tv voice, which I guess is her regular voice, and I find that hard to read as it lacks emotion. Not to be too tough on her - just my thoughts.

Moving story and great that she has the courage to finally talk about it! I love that she was able to open up and my heart hurts for kiddos that are stuck w controlling manipulative mothers. The acting industry needs to be more sensitive to young actors also who are working 10 hour shifts.

Great read. Really eye-opening. As someone who grew up watching Jannette Mccurdy on TV, it totally changed my whole perspective of nickelodeon, child actors, and of Jannette in general. I don’t even know her and I’m so happy for her. Happy that she was able to tell her story and escape the acting world and gain success as a writer. I recommend listening on 0.9 speed bc she talks really fast.

What a wild ride. I have loved Jennette since first seeing her on tv as a kid and the chance to see one of your childhood faves mature and change in a way that is unique to them but speaks to a whole generation. This book helped me reflect on my own relationship with my mother, though our stories are very different in many ways. People always seem shocked when i tell them i think it’s a good thing that my mom passed away when she did, because i don't know how much worse it could have been if she stuck around much longer (regardless if anything done to me was “well intentioned”). I so so so recommend this book to everyone.

Profile Avatar

The story of author's life and the consequences of her mother's all-overwhelming commitment and (wellmeaning?!) abuse resonates and creates a deep feeling of empathy for her. Teh book is well written. I did not much like her reading style and one would of expected of an actor to do a little better, but I don't know her as an actor. She is probably reflecting herself in an honest way.

Just finished the book 5 minutes ago, As someone who grew with such an amazing, loving, and caring mom, I feel so bad whenever I hear stories about people who had to grow up with such terrible and manipulative parents because I simply don’t know where i’d be or how i’d be had I not grown up with the love and support of my amazing mother. It was very clear from the get-go that Jenettes mom was a selfish, narcissistic, and manipulative sociopath who made everyone around her miserable. I cant imagine being Jenettes father, having to work two jobs every day and having to come home to a bitter woman who only put you down every single chance she got. The fact that she wiped her daughters butt until she was 10 and gave her breast and vaginal exams until she was 17 tells you everything you need to know about the type of mother she was. Multiple times in the book Jenette recounts stories of her mom using her cancer to manipulate people into getting what she wants. Jenettes mom’s best friend was named Karen but I think Jenettes mom was the ultimate Karen. She believed no rules applied to her, constantly harassed people just doing their jobs because she believed she was special, and had no problem being rude or manipulative to people as long as it got her her way. I grew up with the mindset of “why don’t people just leave their abusive relationships? it’s that simple” This book has a way of teaching you why it’s so hard to leave an abuser. Jenettes mom conditioned Jenette from an early age that all of Jenettes happiness depended on her mom being happy- and nothing else. When your entire sense of self worth and joy derives around your abusers joys and priorities rather than your own, it’s easy to see why leaving them is a really tall task. I’m grateful I gave this book a read as it gave me a better insight as to why people stay in abusive relationships and just exactly how they seem to form over time (groomed in a way). I wish nothing but the best for Jenette in her road to recovery from a lifetime of mental and physical abuse and her eating disorders. Great book, I highly recommend to anyone on the fence about it

Hands down the best audiobook of 2022. Maybe it’s the nostalgia or realizing that being on a tv show doesn’t make your life perfect. Either way, listening about the that friendship that Jenette had with Miranda healed my childhood heart in a way that I never expected. I’m glad Jennette told her truth. Jennette may never read this review, but you absolutely should listen to this audiobook.

This book is a one of the best books I have ever read/ listened to. The audiobook is an entire experience in itself. Having Jennette read it aloud and hearing her get emotional in some parts was literally having a front seat to her life story. It was beautifully told and brutally honest. I found myself verbally responding to her because I was so enthralled and in the book. It was like talking with her. By the end of the book you feel like you know her. It is also a complete perspective change of my entire childhood watching iCarly. I had no idea, not even a little idea, if what she was going through in her life. She hid everything so convincingly her entire life that this was a massive shock to hear that it wasn’t what it appeared to be in the slightest. Hearing that her and Miranda were actually close outside of the show was a really beautiful thing though. Her honesty and openness absolutely blew me away. I cannot believe she said some of the things she did. I would read this again. This is a book worth owning for anyone who can relate to the material she speaks about or if you loved her in your childhood and want to know her as an adult. What a treat this book was, not because of the hell she went through, but because of how beautifully her story was told and how she came out on the other side stronger and smarter. She is an inspiration and this book could honestly save lives. I will tell many people to read this.
