Summary
A chilling ghost story with a twist: the New York Times bestselling author of The Winter People returns to the woods of Vermont to tell the story of a husband and wife who don't simply move into a haunted house--they build one....

In a quest for a simpler life, Helen and Nate have abandoned the comforts of suburbia to take up residence on forty-four acres of rural land where they will begin the ultimate, aspirational do-it-yourself project: building the house of their dreams. When they discover that this beautiful property has a dark and violent past, Helen, a former history teacher, becomes consumed by the local legend of Hattie Breckenridge, a woman who lived and died there a century ago. With her passion for artifacts, Helen finds special materials to incorporate into the house--a beam from an old schoolroom, bricks from a mill, a mantel from a farmhouse--objects that draw her deeper into the story of Hattie and her descendants, three generations of Breckenridge women, each of whom died suspiciously. As the building project progresses, the house will become a place of menace and unfinished business: a new home, now haunted, that beckons its owners and their neighbors toward unimaginable danger.

The book wasn't horrible, but a lot more could have been done to give it a better flow. The narration, on the other hand, Oh my Lord, from the nasal whine to the mispronounced words, all around just bad. I will be avoiding any book this person narrates for the sake of my ears.

I love all of Jennifer Mcmahon's books so far! This one did not disappoint. The narration was excellent too.

Good story. Refreshingly unique. But not super well-written, so three stars. The narrator’s voice is extremely nasal and the final syllable of most sentences is pushed out in an unpleasant tone. It is so terribly distracting, I had to take breaks.

Excellent narration, but the story seemed a bit odd. Overall, an enjoyable title. It gets you thinking about the mystery around you, even as close as your own home.

This was different than I usually read but I really liked it . Mystery to the end and with many twists and turns

I really liked this book. It kept my attention and having the different chapters from different perspectives is always something I enjoy. Obviously a far fetched story line, but it was fun and uncomplicated.

It was ok. The end was almost like that the author only had three more pieces of paper so cram the end and not really making sense but WTF I'm done.

What a disappointment. Huge waste of time! Predictable to the point of insulting my intelligence!
