Don’t miss the #1 New York Times bestselling blockbuster and Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick that’s sold 3 million copies strong—now an Apple TV+ limited series starring Jennifer Garner!

The “page-turning, exhilarating” (PopSugar) and “heartfelt thriller” (Real Simple) about a woman who thinks she’s found the love of her life—until he disappears.

Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers—Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.

As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was. And that Bailey just may hold the key to figuring out Owen’s true identity—and why he really disappeared.

Hannah and Bailey set out to discover the truth. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen’s past, they soon realize they’re also building a new future—one neither of them could have anticipated.

With its breakneck pacing, dizzying plot twists, and evocative family drama, The Last Thing He Told Me is a “page-turning, exhilarating, and unforgettable” (PopSugar) suspense novel.

too repetitive and not enough happening. Slow and many good leads missed and left hanging. Naration was too too slow. Style of writing very repetitive and preachy.

It’s a good enough story and keeps you engaged. The main issue I had was how melodramatic it could be.

I tried so hard to like this book, too understand the race reviews, but I couldn't do it. It preaches, it is oversimplified, repetitious, and moves at a pace so slow it is infuriatingly frustrating. It has no originality and depends on name dropping of fancy places to create a hollow environment. The narrator uses the same three notes in the same order for every sentence for the entire book. The whole thing was excruciatingly, monotonously boring.

It was an okay story. Wasn’t as good as the hype but still an ok listen.

the strained voice of the narrator makes it a little difficult to enjoy. the story was good. full of drama.

This novel is amazing, I have the book at home but yet have not read it. The narrator does not sound that bad such asa robot voice I mean that would not be the best.

The book seemed more like a mystery story than a thriller, but it was enough to keep me engaged and I finished it quickly. It is probably better suited for a teen/young adult. Narration was just okay, the accents of some of the characters seemed to come and go randomly and I found the way she read for male character lines to be a bit annoying. Overall, it was a quick read that kept me engaged, but it did not live up to the hype.

Great story! Hannah’s wisdom, tenacity, acceptance and self-sacrifice took my breath away. Very Christ-like.

Profile Avatar

It begins with a lot of promise, then gets somewhat overemotional. I guess I just kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. The author’s voice is a bit too much as well.

An entertaining listen while driving on vacation. The plot was good and the two main characters were believable. I would have liked a little more suspense in the storyline. All in all, though, a good listen!

Very catchy plot, I couldn’t stop listening until finished it. And there is a surprising ending. Never expected that, that’s why I like it, as it’s unpredictable

I liked this book, didn't love it. It was slow and items were left hanging in a weird way. Some of the drama was forced. Interested to see what they do with the movie version.

Loved this book so much. With an unexpected ending. Love the narrator and her voice was so pleasant. You should definitely listen to it!

Profile Avatar

Starts promising but quickly derails, the slight “plot-twist” which is pretty tame and predictable happens half way through the book so then you get pages of filler.

Loved this read. I also had the physical book and ended up finishing it like that, but the audio book was amazing. Loved the narrator and truly felt like I was standing right there watching the whole mystery go down in front of me. The contemporary feel of the book also made it really enjoyable and relatable. Only thing I didn’t love was how slow it was in the beginning. I still loved the book! Just wish some parts weren’t as slow. Overall 4/5

This was agonizingly boring. I tried it since I loved the last book I read from Reese’s Book Club. I wish I would’ve read more reviews before wasting a credit and so much time waiting for it to get better.

This is the story about Hannah and 16 year old Bailey trying to find out why Owen, husband and father, disappeared over night. Only things he left were a note to Hannah stating "protect her" and a bag of cash for Bailey. While the two women try to find answers, they get deeper and deeper into Owen's past and into secrets no one could have ever believed a loving father and husband to have. I devoured this book, listening to it in just a couple of days. The narrator has done a superb job, capturing the character's emotions, bringing them to life, while the storyline itself is a spectacular roadmap of twists and turns and unexpected secrets.

I was not expecting it to be a detective story where the main character is the detective. I enjoyed her and I enjoyed her stepdaughter. The main character was more together and responsible than I think the majority of us would be in her circumstance. It was very easy to listen to and I found myself constantly looking for time to continue listening to it. I enjoyed the narrator - I thought she did a terrific job.

Although I liked the premise of the story very much, I thought the writing wasn't very good at all. The rephrasing and restating of the same sentences became so predictable, so boringly predictable, so predictably boring (!) As if she was getting paid by the word or worse, her audience wasn't capable of grasping what she said the first time.

Profile Avatar
Carol C.

I thought this book was just suspenseful enough and I appreciated the ending that deviated from the typical expected.

Profile Avatar

The plot was well thought-through but I found the repetitiveness of set statements too much - and if I heard the name "Bailey" again, I was going to scream. It was all too "heartfelt" for its content. I wondered how on earth the step-mother could care SO MUCH for what was a shallow, angry young woman. One could understand why she was so unpleasant but not why helping her would be such a heartfelt wish of the narrator. Just not real. I felt that the narrator did what she could with the material - "my wrenching heart was torn asunder" - what else could she do with that but plead?

This character-driven narrative speaks about the relationship between Hannah and Bailey as well as the relationship between Hannah and Owen. The plot is straightforward; the mystery surrounds Owen’s disappearance and the reason for it. At its heart, this is a story about family, about love, about truth.\r\n\r\nNuanced characters, a suspenseful mystery, and a search for the truth make this a compelling narrative. Forced to make some difficult decisions, Hannah struggles as she seeks answers. But, as the unfolding narrative documents the search for the truth, it’s obvious that whatever Owen is hiding is more than the trouble at The Shop.\r\n\r\nThe short chapters in the telling of the tale keep the underlying tension steadily building while twists and turns ultimately lead to the surprising, selfless denouement. Readers learn early on that Bailey is antagonistic toward Hannah, even after they’ve spent more than a year together as a family. And, although the girl’s attitude begins to change, readers are certain to wonder if Hannah’s decision would also be Bailey’s decision. But Hannah, positive that she knows what Owen tried so hard to provide for his daughter, chooses what she believes he would choose, chooses what she believes is honoring Owen’s request to “protect her,” no matter what the personal cost.\r\n\r\nRebecca Lowman’s reading voice is pleasant. The story flows easily, keeping the listener involved in the telling of the tale. The character voices remain consistent; the pace comfortable and appropriate. The book is well-narrated.\r\n\r\nRecommended.

Great book with a few true surprises! The narrator was good but used the words “he said” & “she said” far too frequently when it was obvious who had spoken. That, to me, was a bothersome distraction. She was especially good as the book picked up the suspense.

Pretty slow paced book. The characters were unlikeable, especially the ungrateful daughter, Bailey. I had a very hard time making myself listen to it. The narrator had a very slow cadence. I needed to to up the speed to 1.25.

Not one thing I liked about this book! It was a complete waste of time and money. To touch on so many sensitive topics and glaze over them like it’s no biggie. Pedophilia, alcoholism, abuse, assault, child death, depression just to name a few. Not one bit of love in this book, sad it got published.
