Summary
From Bram Stoker Award nominee Ronald Malfi comes a brilliantly chilling novel of childhood revisited, memories resurrected, and fears reborn.

When Laurie was a little girl, she was forbidden to enter the room at the top of the stairs. It was one of many rules imposed by her cold, distant father. Now, in a final act of desperation, her father has exorcised his demons. But when Laurie returns to claim the estate with her husband and ten-year-old daughter, it’s as if the past refuses to die. She feels it lurking in the broken moldings, sees it staring from an empty picture frame, hears it laughing in the moldy greenhouse deep in the woods.

At first, Laurie thinks she’s imagining things. But when she meets her daughter’s new playmate, Abigail, she can’t help but notice her uncanny resemblance to another little girl who used to live next door … who died next door. With each passing day, Laurie’s uneasiness grows stronger, her thoughts more disturbing. Like her father, is she slowly losing her mind? Or is something truly unspeakable happening to those sweet little girls?

I agree with other reviews that the story was good and that pacing of the book was very slow, but not in a building-suspense kind of way. The narrator was adequate but also very slow, perhaps in keeping with the book itself. Thank goodness Audiobooks.com playback includes the 1.5x setting! That made it tolerable. The various plot twists came across more as imminent endings, and toward the end I sincerely wished the book would just get it over with. Of course I had to listen to the end to find out how it came out. Another note: it really bugs me when an author makes grammatical errors; someone should have helped the author (and the editor, one would assume)with the definition and usage for the word "comprised." I wasn't trying to hear mistakes, it's just that I can't help it.

i had read other reviews before listening and they had said it starts off slow. well, it ends that way too. i was bored and unexcited, the narrator was dry and made the characters seem old. nothing thrilling, nothing scary... maybe its just me but i expected more from a story claiming to be a ghost story. not terribly written, just nothing exciting. fail for me.

This is a good ghost story, BUT the book seems to drag on forever.
