A PEOPLE MAGAZINE BEST BOOK OF FALL 2019
In North Devon, where two rivers converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his estranged father’s funeral takes place. On the day Matthew left the strict evangelical community he grew up in, he lost his family too.
Now, as he turns and walks away again, he receives a call from one of his team. A body has been found on the beach nearby: a man with a tattoo of an albatross on his neck, stabbed to death.
The case calls Matthew back to the people and places of his past, as deadly secrets hidden at their hearts are revealed, and his new life is forced into a collision course with the world he thought he’d left behind.

I love all of Ann’s books, so it such a disappointment to have it read so badly. The reader doesn’t flow, and he doesn’t allow the narrative to run as it was written. Further I’ve played with the speed, in order to make it in any way coherent I run it at .75. Such a shame. I tried in vain to find a different recording.

The book is great. The narrator however is another story. He drops words — sort of truncates them in such a way that it is often hard to understand what he’s saying. He also does not differentiate well between characters; it is often not clear who’s speaking in a conversation. Also, his delivery is atonal; while this slightly melancholic monotone is appropriate for the main character, the other characters just seem to be trying to pull themselves out of the mud. The narrators for other Cleeves’ books are much better. I’ve had to buy a Kindle version of this book.
