Summary
After a layoff and months of struggling, Alice Humphrey finally lands her dream job managing a new art gallery in Manhattan’s trendy Meatpacking District. According to Drew Campbell, the well-suited corporate representative who hires her, the gallery is a passion project for its anonymous, wealthy, and eccentric owner. Drew assures Alice that the owner will be hands off, allowing her to run the gallery on her own. Her friends think it sounds too good to be true, but Alice sees a perfect opportunity to make a name for herself beyond the shadow of her famous father, an award-winning and controversial film maker.Everything is perfect until the morning Alice arrives at work to find the gallery gone-the space stripped bare as if it had never existed-and Drew Campbell’s dead body on the floor. Overnight, Alice’s dream job has vanished, and she finds herself at the center of police attention with nothing to prove her innocence. The phone number Drew gave her links back to a disposable phone. The artist whose work she displayed doesn’t seem to exist. And the dead man she claims is Drew has been identified as someone else. When police discover ties between the gallery and a missing girl, Alice knows she’s been set up. Now she has to prove it-a dangerous search for answers that will entangle her in a dark, high-tech criminal conspiracy and force her to unearth long-hidden secrets involving her own family . . .  secrets that could cost Alice her life.

I had chosen this book because I had read all of Alafair's father's stories. I don't think she is up to his level yet. Story line was a little slow getting started and then became quite predictable. Narrator could have used more voice deflection.

I wasn’t in love with this book. I found the storyline to be very slow; it did pick up in the last half, but I still found myself only listening to the book because I felt like I had to finish it.

This would be a good four-star mystery, but the last third of the book helps raise it to five-stars. However what brings Alafair Burke's book to high ratings is her character development. By the end of the book I wanted to know what happened next and there was no more book. I can give her no high praise than that.

Got this book because I like her father's work. This book Had a character driving a Crown Victoria while demonizing "pricks" who drive gas guzzling s.u.v.'s. Not to mention the other political jargon spewing out throughout the beginning. Had to stop listening. Too political for me.

Great book. From the first chapter on it kept me hooked. I like the way the writer weaved in more than one story. The narrator was very good. A good mystery novel.

I really enjoyed this book. You think you know what's happening a dozen different times, but you'll have to wait till the end to get the truth. I just hate how fast they unwind at the end. I wish there was a little more after.

I enjoyed the book. The beginning was a bit slow with the character development. But the last 1/3 of the book was the best part by far.

Very good book - I was hooked from the beginning. I didn't realize at first that the story revolves around two separate cases/people, and the plot goes back and forth. Once I grasped this and all the characters, it made the book better in my opinion. The ending was a surprise, but not far-fetched; all the pieces fell into place perfectly.

A little difficult in the beginning following the description of all the characters, but well worth it if you keep listening. So many twists and turns and a couple of years.
