Summary
Introducing a remarkable new character from #1 New York Times bestselling writer David Baldacci: Atlee Pine, an FBI agent with special skills assigned to the remote wilds of the southwestern United States who must confront a new threat . . . and an old nightmare.

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger by its toe.

It's seared into Atlee Pine's memory: the kidnapper's chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. Mercy was taken. Atlee was spared.

She never saw Mercy again.

Three decades after that terrifying night, Atlee Pine works for the FBI. She's the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon.

So when one of the Grand Canyon's mules is found stabbed to death at the bottom of the canyon-and its rider missing-Pine is called in to investigate. It soon seems clear the lost tourist had something more clandestine than sightseeing in mind. But just as Pine begins to put together clues pointing to a terrifying plot, she's abruptly called off the case.

If she disobeys direct orders by continuing to search for the missing man, it will mean the end of her career. But unless Pine keeps working the case and discovers the truth, it could spell the very end of democracy in America as we know it...

I love listening to David’s books right up until the ending. It’s a little too “Scooby Doo” for me. I’m not a writer, so not sure how he could change it, but it just seems to wrap up quickly to include excruciating detail of the swirling plot. Maybe throw in , “if it wasn’t for you meddling kids and your dog, I could have gotten away with it”...then we’d be complete. I’ll still keep listening.

i liked the book. It’s not typical Baldacci, for sure, but it’s a fun read because it’s so over-the-top — the plot is plausible, but the action is not. It’s kind of a mashup, a conspiracy beach read

Great book. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

The book was good but the narration was distracting. It was very stiff and the transitions between characters was halting and clumsy. It really sounded like they were reading a book and didn't have that smooth, comfortable flow that you find in actual spoken conversation.

Good book, but can't stand the girls voice.

While I do like this book and do not mind at all the strong female lead, it is disappointing that almost every man in this book is a worthless piece of crap, abusive and just an all-around bad person. I'm not too keen on shitting on men just to make women look better. I do want to say that the narrators did an amazing job

Good book, similar to his other series. I didn’t like this one as much as The Memory Man or Will Robbie series, but still a good listen.

I love the "Memory Man" series, so I gave this a try. I thought the story made little sense and was VERY disappointed with the ending. I liked the characters okay, but didn't love them. I like Kyf Brewer and his narration in most books, but not this one. I'm not sure I will listen to more of these books yet, we'll see.

The protagonist was not very compelling and the story was lame. I will pass on the rest of the Atlee Pine series.

Just a fair book. Lots of twists and turns, but a lot of stopping and explaining is required, especially near the end. The female narrator is good. The male narrator needs a few more voices and accents to differentiate between the characters.
