Summary
With the epic sweep of Min Jin Lee's Pachinko and Yaa Gyasi's Homegoing and the lyrical beauty of Vaddey Ratner's In the Shadow of the Banyan, The Mountains Sing tells an enveloping, multigenerational tale of the Trần family, set against the backdrop of the Việt Nam War.
Trần Diệu Lan, who was born in 1920, was forced to flee her family farm with her six children during the Land Reform as the Communist government rose in the North. Years later in Hà Nội, her young granddaughter, Hương, comes of age as her parents and uncles head off down the Hồ Chí Minh Trail to fight in a conflict that tore not just her beloved country, but her family apart.
Vivid, gripping, and steeped in the language and traditions of Việt Nam, The Mountains Sing brings to life the human costs of this conflict from the point of view of the Vietnamese people themselves, while showing us the true power of kindness and hope. The Mountains Sing is celebrated Vietnamese poet Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai's first novel in English.

A captivating heart wrenching story over several generations of conflict in Vietnam. A sensitive approach to a lot of hatred and wrong doing. Poetic,, well written and excellently narrated. Highly recommended! Thank you for writing this book Nguyen.

Is the first vip credit audiobook that I really like, it's a bit slow sometimes but the story is very interesting and the voice of the narrator is great. I learned a lot about Vietnam and Vietnam war.

I was profoundly moved by this story of courage and strength. To hear the experiences of the Vietnamese people from their perspective and to discover that hope and kindness were never lost, even during the very worst events in their history, was so deeply inspiring.

I enjoyed this book. For me it was about family, where people love and support each others through terrible times.

A remarkable book telling a difficult and sometimes heartrending story. Even having lived through this period of history did not prepare me for the gruesome details of what happened on an individual basis. The language of the book gives one the flavor of a non-native speaker telling the story, which made it more realistic. The narrator is excellent and it was good to hear some of the native language inserted. I'm glad I had the opportunity to listen to this book.

It is a beautifull book. Interesting to hear about this part of history from the Vietnam point of view. The narrator has a very pleasant voice but it was sp pleasant and soft that I sometimes had some troule concentrating on the story.

I loved this book. My ears found the descriptions to be musical. The story is brilliantly laid out to illustrate the relentlessness of war and its aftermath through with a compassion that is rigorous as well as forgiving.

The narrative jumped between the past and present much, without indication. After a few hours of listening, I could tell by the narrative. Difficult at first but worked out. Excellent story and narration.

This is now one of my favorite books. I had no idea how hard it was for the North Vietnamese. I only knew that we helped the SouthVietnamese. There are definitely parallels with what’s happening in our country and what happened under Nazi rule. The characters were brought to life beautifully by the narrator and she helped me visualize the beauty of their country.
