Summary
In the bestselling tradition of Rescuing Sprite comes the story of a puppy brought back from the brink of death, and the family he adopted.

In 2002, Larry Levin and his twin sons, Dan and Noah, took their terminally ill cat to the Ardmore Animal Hospital outside Philadelphia to have the beloved pet put to sleep. What would begin as a terrible day suddenly got brighter as the ugliest dog they had ever seen--one who was missing an ear and had half his face covered in scar tissue--ran up to them and captured their hearts. The dog had been used as bait for fighting dogs when he was just a few months old. He had been thrown in a cage and left to die until the police rescued him and the staff at Ardmore Animal Hospital saved his life. The Levins, whose sons are themselves adopted, were unable to resist Oogy's charms, and decided to take him home.

Heartwarming and redemptive, Oogy is the story of the people who were determined to rescue this dog against all odds, and of the family who took him home, named him 'Oogy' (an affectionate derivative of ugly), and made him one of their own.

I loved this book. Great read. I have 3 pit bulls at home & they are all wonderful. It breaks my heart how pit bull/pit bull type dogs are constantly discriminated against. As if they are not already brutalized & tormented by being forced to fight, but breed bans in place kill beautiful loving dogs for no reason at all. The media always bites on to stories involving pit bull type dogs. Why don't you hear about it when a lab bites? They have a real bad rap. My dogs are loyal, loving, goofy, intelligent, strong, athletic pups. One of them in particular like Oogy, he is a very special boy. He has a big grizzly bear head & is sweet as pie. His charisma for life is impossible to overlook. He makes everyone smile who meets him & gives him the time of day. I can't imagine my life without him.

If you don't like this story then you need to make sure your heart is beating. The lessons both taught and learned are fascinating. Oogy teaches not only love, but compassion, acceptance, forgiveness and how to move on even in the face of horror. He has a spirit that is bottomless. He taught his family that our past is a part of who we are it isn't all that we are and that even when we may have been to hell and back, we can survive with love and grace in tact and live a beautiful happy hopeful life filled with love. Oogy is simply joy and love personified (dogified??). Everyone should have an Oogy in their life. So those of you who can, turn off your computer and head over to your local shelter and feel the love. You won't be sorry. And if you can't bring one home volunteer. The love of a pet can change your life forever.
