Summary
The Golds and the Hartes, neighbors for eighteen years, have always been inseparable. So have their children—and it’s no surprise that in high school, Chris and Emily’s friendship blossoms into something more. And then, suddenly,
unimaginable tragedy strikes, threatening the bonds that had seemed so indestructible.
When midnight calls from the hospital come in, no one is ready for the truth. Emily is dead at seventeen from a gunshot wound to the head. There’s a single unspent bullet in the gun that Chris pilfered from his father’s cabinet—a bullet
that Chris tells police he intended for himself. But a local detective has doubts about the suicide pact that Chris describes.
This extraordinary, poignant novel paints an indelible portrait of two families in anguish as they find themselves on opposite sides of a painful divide … and confronts every parent’s worst fear.

Loved it! Three quarters of the way through and I still wasn’t sure exactly what had taken place. The author is so good at tackling these difficult issues, and leaving us to decide which side we come down on. She really captures all of life’s nuances and complications.

Best Picoult story out there.

The book was good, interesting and fleshed out the characters well. The narrator's voice was way too old to portray the characters well, so that was a little less than ideal, but overall a good story.

The book was OK but not one of my favorites. I particularly had a hard time with the narrator for the first several hours of the book.

One of my absolute favourite Jodi Picoult books, and I own them all either on audiobook or novel. This one is full of plot twists and leaves you hanging until the ending. I found it super engaging and I got through it fast because I always wanted to know what happened next. Now that I have finished the book, I still want to know what happens next!
