Summary
The year is 1871, and wealthy ranch owner Jane Withersteen is in trouble. She has incurred the displeasure of her Mormon church leaders by refusing to marry a church elder and by befriending Gentiles (non-Mormons). In rides Lassiter, the quintessential Western hero: mysterious, purposeful, a deadly gunslinger, but with an unexpected streak of gentleness. While Lassiter is assisting Jane at the ranch, her friend and rider Bern Venters is having an adventure of his own in the Utah canyonlands. Riders of the Purple Sage is a story of heroism, love, brave men and strong women, good dogs and fast horses. And who is that Masked Rider?

The book was very enjoyable. Several times I found myself parked in my car at my destination for minutes at a time just to listen a little longer. I typically enjoy male narrators for genres like westerns but Laurie Anne Walden did a fantastic job and I couldn’t have been happier listening to her voice. I’ll likely listen to more from both Zane Grey and also the narrator if I can find it.

I wasn’t expecting to like this story as much as I did. Interesting characters that are flawed but also have depth and passion. Filled with ideas about religion, control, property rights, women’s rights and the meaning of desire and love. With lots of horses too!

Classic western. Narrator seemed a little hurried but otherwise was good

My first Western, not a movie, very enjoyable. Like the characters, story, and details. The reader was excellent also. Wish someone would make it into a movie.

I listened out of curiosity because someone I knew many years ago was a fan of Zane Grey. I didn't expect the story to be so well written. The narrator's singsong way of reading nearly had me stop listening early on. Fortunately the story was too gripping and eventually her voice faded into the background and the story took over.

Really bad narrator. No reason for this.

Really interesting story. Classic western theme although I was surprised by the independent woman main character. Loved the gentle western accent of the narrator which added emit the story for me, at least. Will look forward to listening/readi F more Zane Grey based on this novel.
