Summary
Nothing goes right for Eloise. The one day she wears her new suede boots, it rains cats and dogs. When the subway stops short, she’s always the one thrown into some stranger’s lap. Plus, she’s had more than her share of misfortune in the way of love. In fact, ever since she realized romantic heroes are a thing of the past, she’s decided it’s time for a fresh start.Setting off for England, Eloise is determined to finish her dissertation on that dashing pair of spies, the Scarlet Pimpernel and the Purple Gentian. But what she discovers is something the finest historians have missed: the secret history of the Pink Carnation—the most elusive spy of all time. As she works to unmask this obscure spy, Eloise stumbles across answers to all kinds of questions. Like how did the Pink Carnation save England from Napoleon? What became of the Scarlet Pimpernel and the Purple Gentian? And will Eloise Kelly escape her bad luck and find a living, breathing hero all her own?

"The Secret History of the Pink Carnation" is a cute little romance novel piggybacking on the success of the early 20th century historical adventure novel "The Scarlet Pimpernel" by Baroness Orczy. It has all the hallmarks of the book it immulates: masked heros; a silly, self-deluded heroine that constantly needs rescued from her own folly; frustrated lust; and flowery prose. Great fun for an easy summer beach read/listen! Of couse, one could always pose the legitimate question: "Why not just read the classic "Scarlet Pimpernel" instead of the knockoff "Pink Carnation"?

Yes! An intelligent woman's romantic mystery, masterfully narrated. You will enjoy the story and although somewhat predictable, will anticipate your next car-ride to catch up with these well-defined characters. Have fun

Really enjoyed this book, I missed a couple of exits while driving because I was so engrossed with the story. I enjoy books where each character has their own individual personality and how the reader understands how they think and their motivation. Lauren Willig wrote so beautifully that each person came to life. I also liked the fact that the women were strong characters and heroines in the story.

I loved this. And I love the reader's ability to bring the characters to life. The only thing that keeps it from being a 5 is that I wish there was less sex and more spying. I prefer the historical novel aspect over the romance novel bits, although I enjoy the combination, sometimes the love scenes had me yelling, get on with the spying already!

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ (LISTENED TO)!! As with all historical novels, I was at first afraid that it would be long on history and short on story. So not true! This book has everything - history, suspense, intrigue, romance! Also, many historical novels tend to go on for far too long with flowery descriptions - which sometimes makes it hard to follow the story. This one had just the right amount of description so that the story was entertainingly readable. I could not put it down (stop listening to it). Loved it, loved it, LOVED IT!!
