'Anyone who enjoys novels that are scary, erotic, touching, tragic and thrilling should rush right out to the nearest bookstore and pick up The Shadow of the Wind. Really, you should.' —Michael Dirda, The Washington Post

“This is one gorgeous read.” —Stephen King

'I still remember the day my father took me to the Cemetary of Forgotten Books for the first time...'

Barcelona, 1945: A city slowly heals in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, and Daniel, an antiquarian book dealer’s son who mourns the loss of his mother, finds solace in a mysterious book entitled The Shadow of the Wind, by one Julián Carax. But when he sets out to find the author’s other works, he makes a shocking discovery: someone has been systematically destroying every copy of every book Carax has written. In fact, Daniel may have the last of Carax’s books in existence. Soon Daniel’s seemingly innocent quest opens a door into one of Barcelona’s darkest secrets—an epic story of murder, madness, and doomed love.

I purchased this book because of a review I had seen on Pinteres, but I never imagined it would be this amazing. It really does feel like a whole movie that you don't want to end. The narrator made the book come to live in a spectacular way. As a Spanish speaker myself, it made me feel more immersed and connected to the characters and the places.

This was a good book. The narrator did a great job.

A prime example of a failure to develop characters especially the narrator, not to mention how the author thinks it’s perfectly ok to tell rather than show. The story was more melodramatic than it needed to be and this audiobook narration fed into if not intensified the melodrama. I couldn’t wait to finish this book and get it over with.

Fabulous writing and narration! Zafron is a master at developing characters, plots and integrating these with historical facts about post-vol war in Spain. I had previously read the book and it was a real treat to listen this time. I missed so much before. NED TO LISTEN TO LABYRINTH OF THE SPIRITS TO COMPLETE THE STORY!

I had read this book in the past and knew I loved it. However I found the narration and the music, writer by Zafon, to be overly melodramatic and made the listening experience for me less enjoyable than reading a physical copy. Although I found the audiobook disappointing, I’d still recommend it to anyone like me, for whom listening is the only way you get time to “read” now. It’s still a great story, and having started the next book in the series, I can say that the narrator of the next book is better, but you really need to read Shadow of the Wind first.

Reading this story has definitely changed my life. I was lucky enough to finish this book while staying in Barcelona, Spain. The way that Zafon describes everything is so magical in all of its attention to detail interwoven with beauty. This is definitely the type of book that can keep your nose stuck in a book for hours; it's so atmospheric! The narrator was wonderful as well, and the music that is added in the background made this listening experience all the better!

Book is ok. It’s not bad by any means, just not as much “thriller” as I was looking for. It’s more of a generally interesting, VERY long winded, story. The narrator is the best part of the book.

A very good book, complex but ensures to keep your attention. The first book I have been able to get my husband to listen to.
