Summary
Overthinking isn't a personality trait. It's the sneakiest form of fear.
It steals time, creativity, and goals. It's the most expensive, least productive thing companies invest in without even knowing it. And it's an epidemic.
In Soundtracks, New York Times bestselling author Jon Acuff offers a proven plan to change overthinking from a super problem into a superpower.
If you want to tap into the surprising power of overthinking and give your dreams more time and creativity, learn how to DJ the soundtracks that define you.
If you can worry, you can wonder. If you can doubt, you can dominate. If you can spin, you can soar.

After the first listen, I know Soundtracks is a book I want to read/listen to again so I can take notes and let all the information soak in. In this book, Jon Acuff combines truth and helpful recommendations with stories, wit, and humor in a way that makes it both impactful and fun.

Jon doesn’t just write good books. He takes then time to really dig in and do tons of research. Then somehow he puts it all together in an audiobook that is fun to listen to. The concepts he shares in Soundtracks are practical and attainable. I’m convinced that changing your soundtracks will actually change everything.

As a habitual offender suffering from analysis paralysis Jon gives some tremendous insight on how to quiet those soundtracks and switch them into motivating hits! The bonus of having him read and with some extra tips makes it even better!

Thank you, Jon Acuff, for teaching me to curate a playlist of thoughts to improve my life. This book is smart, funny, and enjoyable, with a “why-have-I-never-thought-of-this” solution to a problem I’ve struggled with my whole life. Well worth the price of admission. I will be reading again.

This was a great read. Jon does a great job of personalizing his book for the audio listeners. Also, if you are overthinking on whether or not you should buy/read this book, then this is certainly the book for you. I look forward to building off of the things I learned in this book.

I've always appreciated how Jon dovetails humor with his practical advice and real-world insight. This book was the same excellent combination. I laughed out loud at multiple points and I also now have useful tools I can use in my own life to dial down my overthinking. I highly recommend all of Jon's work and this book is no different. Thanks Jon!

Given the title, this book is a MUST listen. Rare combo of inspiring AND entertaining. The Lord has given you an amazing gift, J Acuff! I listened to your interview with Annie F Downs on TSF and as soon as I got to work I pre-purchased TWO copies - one for me and one for my boss. Most impulsive move for me. And you delivered!

This is an awesome book about changing your overthinking "Soundtracks" into a SUPERpower. It is easy to read but is full of helpful practical ways to change your not so kind thoughts into helpful thoughts you can play on REPEAT. As I read the book, I caught myself smiling and laughing. I highly recommend it.

Jon knocked it out of the park with this one. The dollar coin/50-cent piece story is a great way to end. This is a very relatable book. I enjoyed the audio book because of how Jon delivers the book. I’ll listen to it again. Highly recommended.

One of the best books I have ever read/listened to. Hilarious and helpful, inspiring and challenging, worth every penny and every minute. (If you read no further, just go buy the book.) Many who try to help with this topic either tell you to "just stop" (as if we could and just refuse??) or make you feel like a horrible person for this "stupid, self-destructive thing you do" (which really just sends you into further downward spirals of overthinking). Jon Acuff isn't like that. He is humble in sharing his own overthinking patterns and it gives you the freedom to admit that overthinking really is stealing time and leaving you with stress instead. Then he shares how to replace broken soundtracks with new ones. You can see the difference is made in his life just in the way that he shares his stories and it gives you hope that you too can listen to the new soundtracks. Just listening to Jon read this book has already helped me to not obsess in the 24 hours between a terrifyingly vague "do have a few minutes to chat?" text and the time the person called. (And of course it was a totally great conversation instead of an awful one.) I haven't even done the hard work of replacing and repeating new soundtracks yet! (Just think how superpowered I will be then.) On the outside, I am an extrovert, typically happy and helpful. I appear confident and decisive. But I know that on the inside, I am a very uncomfortable, clenched in the fetal position overthinker who worries about how every thing I do could negatively affect someone else and how that is more important than how it actually affects me. (I do know how messed up that is, but that's where I have been stuck for a very, very long time.) So instead of the broken soundtrack, "I said the wrong thing and everyone is secretly mad at me" which makes me feel like I need to obsessively go fix everything, I am trying to replace it with, "I didn't hurt anyone on purpose. They are adults. If they are mad at me, they will tell me." (Just one example of how I'm trying to apply this book.) I am not completely cured of my overthinking yet, but Jon and his straightforward book have helped me take a flying leap in the right direction. Highly recommend to all.

I’ve enjoyed all of Jon’s books and this is his best yet. I watched his Overcoming Overthinking course and am listening to his All It Takes is a Goal podcast. I’ve put the principles to use and my outlook and motivation has greatly improved.

Love that Jon reads this himself. His personality makes the words and ideas jump off the page so to speak. The content itself has wonderful practice ways to think about what we are thinking then move those thoughts through to change and action.

Really do enjoy Jon’s books. This one is different because he’s funny but super practical. At first, I was a bit annoyed at how he created his own anthem - aren’t there enough good affirmations out there? But then I really loved the data behind it and how they applied to us, the overthinkers. I’ve already told my mom and co- workers about it. Good books are my foyer ideas.

Absolutely loved this! Couldn’t get enough. I am a chronic over thinker so I’m excited to have real and tangible steps to use to get myself out of that cycle. I also really appreciate Jon’s style - just enough humor to keep me engaged yet not lacking in value!

How we think matters. It’s often hard for us to recognize and change our thinking to help us move towards our goals. In Soundtracks, Jon gives you a simple but powerful way to notice and change the volume on the soundtracks playing in your head. With humor, research and personal stories, this book will help you purposely decide what soundtracks work for you.

This book is thought-provoking and humorous. Since I just finished it, I'm not going to say life-changing... yet. Until I put it all into practice, which I plan to. It is so relatable and practical. I can already see my mind shifting and its not even been a week. Thank you Jon for narrating it yourself, now I will hear your words in my head as I work on replacing the old soundtracks with the new ones. Its going to be a fun ride, to see where these techniques take me, I am launching myself into the new concert in my mind.

I come from a family full of over-thinkers and anxiety sufferers. As such, I've read extensively on the subject. Jon Acuff makes the material fun and easy to follow. He takes serious material and makes it light-hearted. I'm getting a copy for all of my kids.

As a faithful reader and listener to Jon Acuff for many years now, I was excited to get a deep dive into his new ideas and the things that he believes would help revolutionize our inner soundtracks. I was not disappointed. The first few chapters do an excellent job of laying out the framework for what soundtracks are and where they come from. The second half of the book gets very personal as Jon begins to set the vision for how to identify specific soundtracks in your own mind and then replace them with the right kind of soundtracks. The final chapter about symbols and soundtracks really hits home! And that’s the thing about Jon’s book: if you so the work, you will hear new soundtracks! I can recommend this to friends and family at all different stages of life and confidently believe they can forge new soundtracks in their minds.

I changed one small soundtrack in my head, and I'm watching it change a lot of things in my life already - it's amazing how easy it was too. It's about being kinder to yourself - just try the book!

Soundtracks, by Jon Acuff is thought-life changing. I’ve never been a believer in the power of positive thinking. However I believe every negative thing I think about myself and my efforts, weird! Soundtracks helped me realize my thinking hypocrisy. I’ve lived with so many “soundtracks” that have sucked the life out of my ideas and my life. Jon, through Soundtracks, has given me a great roadmap to picking new positive and life giving soundtracks to listen to. I’ve already forced myself to replace the old soundtracks with the new on several occasions and I’ve got to say, it’s like a giant weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. If you overthink things and tend to believe the negative rather than the positive, this book is a MUST!

This book is amazing.  It's the book you never knew you needed.  The information contained in this book is, hands down, going to change so many people's lives. It's simple, straight forward, and easy to read. Jon's great sense of humor peppers the pages with just the right amount of jokes and stories to make it relatable and easy to digest. This will be another book I collect to give away. People need this!!!! Almost as much as Jon needs queso and legos!!!

I've read most (if not all?) of Jon Acuff's books and I think this is definitely his best yet. He is a goal guru and his writing, as well as the community groups he hosts on Facebook, is changing how I deal with perfectionism, procrastination, and overall negative thinking. He has done numerous online challenges in the last few years that I've participated in. Some of the challenges he hosts are paid but he brings the same value and enthusiasm to others that are free. The community of people that results from these challenges is one of a kind on Facebook and is quite honestly one of the most supportive and kindest places you'll find online. Truly enjoyed this book. His humor and his down-to-earth practical ideas are what set him apart from the numerous other positive thinking, productivity/hustle 'experts' out there today. Although he has been honing his goal and productivity ideas over the last few books he's written and with the feedback he gets from thousands of his readers/fans/challenge participants, he also hired a Ph.D. researcher to 'bring the data' to this book. Tons of real-life, practical examples of the principles he's discussing. Really brought it to the next level with this one!

I love Jon Acuff's books because he provides so much research backed wisdom in a funny relatable way that it is impossible not to improve your life. Soundtracks explains thinking and why/how overthinking occurs and provides ways to adjust those broken thoughts/soundtracks to new soundtracks to overcome overthinking and improve your life. Highly recommend this book and all of his other books as well!

Jon Acuff has a way of perfectly (and hilariously) describing the runaway thoughts in my and my wife’s heads. We love the author-read audio version: it feels like we’re watching him speak at a conference. We heartily recommend all of Jon’s books- especially to those couples like us who are pursuing side hustles.
