Summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Discover the global phenomenon that tells an unforgettable story of love, loss, courage, and healing.

“Compellingly artful . . . [a] blockbuster memoir.”—The New Yorker (Best Books of the Year)

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

For Harry, this is that story at last.

Before losing his mother, twelve-year-old Prince Harry was known as the carefree one, the happy-go-lucky Spare to the more serious Heir. Grief changed everything. He struggled at school, struggled with anger, with loneliness—and, because he blamed the press for his mother’s death, he struggled to accept life in the spotlight.

At twenty-one, he joined the British Army. The discipline gave him structure, and two combat tours made him a hero at home. But he soon felt more lost than ever, suffering from post-traumatic stress and prone to crippling panic attacks. Above all, he couldn’t find true love.

Then he met Meghan. The world was swept away by the couple’s cinematic romance and rejoiced in their fairy-tale wedding. But from the beginning, Harry and Meghan were preyed upon by the press, subjected to waves of abuse, racism, and lies. Watching his wife suffer, their safety and mental health at risk, Harry saw no other way to prevent the tragedy of history repeating itself but to flee his mother country. Over the centuries, leaving the Royal Family was an act few had dared. The last to try, in fact, had been his mother. . . .

For the first time, Prince Harry tells his own story, chronicling his journey with raw, unflinching honesty. A landmark publication, Spare is full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.

Well done Harry. Excellent read. Hate him or like him, this book was well written. No stone left unturned. His truth. His word.

I highly recommend this book because it's not just heartbreaking beautiful written but also so inspiring.

Thank you for being so brave, honest, and kind to share your life, I am sure this book will help and inspire so many people to to be real human as you are my dear.

I really enjoyed this book. I have always found it astounding what the press gets away with across the pond. I am so glad Harry found his voice and can speak freely now. I also lost my mother young and really related to the way Harry processed his grief. His growth in this book is surprisingly relatable.

I must admit, despite its length, I could hardly press pause, only doing so to get some sleep over the three nights I listened to it. I suppose I wasn’t anticipating he’d share so much about his childhood trauma. The headlines made it sound like it was going to be all about the last 5 years of his life. But his own self introspection that he walked us through starting from a deep trauma far back he is looking to heal from is such a perfect place to start. As he learns how to heal from such deep trauma, it puts into perspective for himself (and the reader) the last few years of his life, and the choices he has made. I think it too easy to say “well if you don’t want the press hounding you, then stop putting things out there!” Well, I’d say he had a duty to himself - for his own growth in order to in turn be a better husband, a better father, a better human - to share his truth. It’ll be up to each reader to believe or not the content, his sincerity. I, for one, do.

The way this book is getting review bombed by all the royalists with their panties in a twist is laughable. It's well-written, raw, and represents Harry taking his power back from the press. It's not perfect, but neither is he.

Well written. I feel you Harry. Good for you for having the courage to break the toxic family cycle. Proud of you. Wishing you and yours the very best in love and happiness. Well done!

Is there anything good in his life? They way he complains about every little thing that has occurred in his life is exhausting. Every single thing that has been done or said to him is a slight, or they are working against him and his wife. Newflash Harry- their are WAY more important things going on all over the world than you whining about this trivial immature crap. It literally sounds like a 4 year old tattling on someone. I’m having a hard time believing he is a war hero who has gone through such traumatic experiences and he is still worried and crying because of what his older brother did or got when they were children. Most get over sibling rivalries and fighting as teenagers maybe early 20s, but not Harry. Not only did my older sisters not speak to me at school, but if they did acknowledge me it was to knock by books out of my hand or something, and I also got that from their friends at school as well. It’s all NORMAL sibling behavior! I really wish he would get over his self importance thinking people actually want to read/hear this crap or even hear what he has to say in general, and most from what I’ve seen is people actually reading the book just to make fun of him. And he deserves it to do this to his family. It takes a really vile, angry, jealous and sad whinebag to actually air these “grievances” against his family in public and put in print. I couldn’t even finish listening to this, even at 1.5 speed.

I grew up in the U.K. ,some of Harry’s stories were similar to mine ,my father telling me of my mother passing the story of thinking they were still alive to the dreams that felt real then the sadness of it not being true,I too lost myself as I was 11 when I lost my parents 3 weeks apart. This was a wonderful read ,great job Harry ,your words ,your truth and why the heck not! We are not living his life or how he felt but this ,this book gives us a glimpse, lives he narrates it .

A very touching memoir. It was nice to finally get an account of Harry's life, from Harry. He lived through a lot of sadness, but I'm so glad he found purpose through his pain. It was very funny at parts, and he came alive when he described his military service. You could tell how much that time meant to him. His love of Africa, and all things nature, was also evident. Above all, the love he has for his wife & kids seems to have filled him with the love that eluded him for most of his life. Harry narrated it perfectly, and the book was beautifully written.

There is nothing Spare about this man. I took several minutes after it was over, reflecting and taking it all in....and something came to me. What if Harry had been the first born and heir? He would now be king, and the world would be much better for it. The narration was fantastic. His story, in his voice. sharing his truth. I hope this process has brought some much deserved peace to his soul.

There are people starving in the world while others are struggling on minimum pay & I have a friend who is on borrowed time as she is dying of the dreaded C word. Every time I speak to her she is incredibly positive & says she has no other option than to accept it & make the most of it. Regardless of what life hands us, let's look for ways to help others which stops us getting stuck in our own problems. A huge mansion with 16 bathrooms, hundreds of millions of dollars in the bank, healthy children, servants, expensive cars, butlers, private jets, need I go on? All that & you spend your time trashing your Family for money? Use your public platform to be a blessing in the lives of others instead!!

Profile Avatar

Everything about this book is eye opening. You feel as if you are standing by him as he makes his way through an obstacle course of life. My heart goes out to him and Megan. I wish him a long and happy life filled with love and peace.

This is hard to even listen to. It's written in a feminine, 7th grade English style. And Harry sounds like he is reading something he has never read. I wanted to like it. But the bit about sending a hit on your own dad? I think he is a psycho. I don't think this is normal for someone who has lost their mom, to be this obsessed with her, either.

Profile Avatar
Caroline M.

Finally we hear Harry’s life experiences told in his own voice. His struggles will resonate with anyone who has ever disrupted toxic family systems and fought for solid ground. No human beings life should exist for public consumption.

Profile Avatar

I think a lot of folks have gotten their knickers in a twist about this book because is destroys the "fairy tale" life of Royalty. Including the "Royal Observers". I thought it was well done, His voice, his truth, his struggles. I can relate in some ways to being a "spare", I was the 5th child. He lost his mother at a very tender age that he was close to. I have a feeling that Harry might have undiagnosed learning issues. He himself says he isn't a good student and struggled to get passing grades. He appears to be happiest when he is in Botswana and the Military. Botswana likely because he is treated like a regular guy, like he was in the military. I got the impression he was rather annoyed that his 'royal' status kept him from being all he could be while he was in the Army. Like his words or not, he has basically torn the veil between them and us. So we can see that, yes, they are born into privilege but with the privilege comes a golden cage.

A great listen, reveals normal family struggles but with the complications of being royal, I think Harry and Megan have done what’s best for them and their family, as hard as that seems to be for everyone, I believe they will all come back together in time with love and forgiveness all around!

I loved this book. Honestly, autobiographies are just meant to be listened to so that you can hear the story from the person who lived it. It was clear and honest and heartbreaking. It was tough to know what to expect with all the media hype and hyperbole. In truth, this is simply his story to tell. He owns it. It's his perspective. It's not right that many have made money writing about he and Meghan's lives but people don't believe they have the right to have their perspectives and voices heard. I can't wait to see what is now possible with his newly found confidence. There are many exciting chapters still to live!

I was completely surprised, after all the nonsense in the media, this is an excellent Co-written book. I think it’s much better in audio form, because you get the intent, and from the heart honesty. From the first chapter I knew i would listen to the very end. From all the hoopla on both sides of the pond, I was unsure if I would enjoy this book, I did very much and i am going to listen again. I am a Brit who escaped to California in the 1980’s, I recently spent five years back in the UK, giving end of life care for my elderly parents. I was stunned at the general lack of emotional intelligence, lack of joy, and avoidance of physical expression. I had to practice not smiling too much ! My friendly direct openness was very unwelcome. So on a very small scale, I intimately understand the hostility Meghan has experienced. I cannot imagine what that has felt like in a national level. I am so happy that Harry got out of this suffocating and archaic institution, and is raising his family in here in sunny California.

A large section of the book is about Harry's military career. This was unexpected, but not unwelcome. His pride in having served is evident. This is in direct contrast to the insecurities he is faced with when dealing with his own family. The book creates a portrait of a complicated man, who ultimately is forced to choose between his very basic needs of privacy, dignity, and autonomy, or service to his Queen.

I was astonished by this book. It was very well written and narrated. I was enraptured and excited with each new chapter. I learned more than I ever wanted to know about the royal family. The Prince did a stellar job at storytelling, combining humour, satire, and raw drama into a more compelling narrative with each chapter. I was amazed at the lifestyle and the choices made for him, the rules under which he lived, the expectations placed upon him, the absolute control wielded by the monarch, and the machinations of the royal family and the media. I was horrified and enraged at those machinations and outraged about the pure and unrelenting cruelty of the paparazzi. The calculated disregard and hostility, and the subsequent expulsion of him and his wife left me feeling bereft and heartbroken. I admire them for staying strong together and choosing their family's well-being as their priority, and I truly admire and applaud Prince Harry's courage in sharing his truth with the world.

In the long history of Britain’s monarchy, no one in the royal family has allowed the world to share their experiences like Prince Harry has done here. As a student of British literature (Boston College MA), I felt that alone was reason enough to listen to Prince Harry tell his story. I am very glad I did. It’s not only an historically important act of bravery and an attempt to connect with people more intimately than any preceding royal, it’s an intimate portrait from an emotionally neglected, intelligent, dutiful lightning rod child, hunted by his mother’s killers, facing a terrifying world without sufficient nurture or love or loyalty from his dysfunctional family. More than an important work of literature because of its historical importance, his story resonates powerfully with my own experiences—something which I had not expected. I have seen many cruel comments from people who have read summaries of this book. Hearing Harry read in his own sincere, naive, boyish, soldierly manner is the best way to access this text. I recommend it to everyone.

I really loved this book. From the outside looking in who knew the inner working of the monarchy. They captivated the world It looked like a fairytale wedding and these two were going to do great things and outshine Prince William and Kate That is why the British press had to criticize Meghan at every turn. This woman had done nothing but to put positive energy in this world to try to make it better place. Here we have another American actress a biracial one at that, marrying into royal family. We have all seen what has happened throughout history. I'm so glad they found each other. I hope they find peace

Well written, genuine and honestly read - Harry gave us a glimpse into his life and the machine that is the monarchy - and it was shocking. The sick, twisted, symbiotic relationship between the monarchy and the press was eye-opening. One does not exist without the other, but it's not equal, the press does all the taking.

Profile Avatar

It is astonishing that the world continues to put up with bad journalism, paparazzi that bully and harass, and news organizations with agendas. I read this book to get a better understanding of Britain and the Monarch, which I did, but my takeaway is also a reminder that there are many, many people in power that should not be; whether that be the King of England, US politicians, and the owners of biased news organizations. Our world needs help.

I was thoroughly involved in this autobio immediately. Harry's narration was excellent. Content fascinating. His recall is incredible...wonder if he kept a journal to recall in such detail. Learned a lot about his impressive military service. I went into this skeptical--fearful it would be self-pitying (Matthew Perry). Well done, Harry.

I was surprised to find myself enjoying this book - I had not thought I would. It was very well written and great to hear the story "in Harry's own voice". It is certainly clear now why Harry had to leave to protect his family - to give them a happy life away from the British press as well as the repressive monarchy. It is also clear he wanted the love of his "granny", father, mother and brother...too bad that seems to still be impossible.

I think this book is well written and narrated. It revealed a lot about Harry and his family that I did not know. My thoughts on the audio book SPARE. Having Prince Harry read his biography by his ghost writer is the way to go. He sounds genuinely honest. I mostly believe him. His refined accent is mesmerizing. He shares a whole lot, including a story his frostbit penis. In most of his book he portrays his family very positively. He talks about Charles as a loving dad interested in him and Wills, unfortunately not affectionate or emotionally available. Many dads are like this. Charles is a caring dad. He speaks of William as an older brother, Wills does as older siblings like to do. Ask my sister. Love, tease, fight and protect when needed. He torments his brother, no different than many older siblings. He has affection for the entire family, he adores his grandparents and extended family. The exception is Camilla. He hates the British press with a passion. No surprise, Camilla and the press hurt his mother. It is not until the last few chapters that Harry starts to discuss the negativity towards him and Meghan. In Harry’s eyes and if it is true, Williams eyes too, Charles is very influenced by Camilla and will do anything to protect her and to ensure he himself becomes king. Camilla seems to like to throw both brothers to the media wolves to keep the press from focusing on her. According to Harry, when the heat was on Camilla- suddenly the press got leaked information about one of the brothers. William and Kate seem to turn hateful and began drinking the anti Meghan Kool-Aid after Harry was engaged. Kate in particular seems to act entitled. Of course, her position makes her entitled to be entitled. Of course this book is one sided and I can see how stories can be twisted. In Summary- Harry is being truthful but does come off at times like a whiny baby not getting his fair share. Meghan has some type of emotional health issue and does like to be a victim. Which at times she really is a victim, and other times it's a bit of hyperbole! Wills is a jackass, and pretty nasty at times and will push his brother out of the picture for the good of the crown. The crown that will be his someday. Charles would do anything to keep favor with public opinion. Including making bad decisions about his sons. Camilla is a witch and perfectly suited to be the wicked step mother queen. Kate is snobbish and a mean girl. I liked the Queen and Philip. They are a typical dysfunctional family in chaos because their mother died at an early age and they did not have a cohesive family unit. Dad was too busy elsewhere. It is just playing out in public and not behind closed doors on elm st anywhere. I do recommend reading this book. You may get a different opinion.

A delicate flower so put upon. I stopped at the horrifying slaughter of rhinos, skipped to the end and poor stoic guy was still whining in monotone.

What a powerful story of sadness, growth, and love for family, friends, spouse, and country. Prince Harry should be applauded for putting up with so much pain for the sake of his family’s reputation. He didn’t choose to be born into the royal family, and ultimately he chose the family that really matter to him. It was painful to see the hate and vitriol hurled at Meg. They handled it better than anyone else and chose each other. That love is impressive and worth fighting for. Well done, Harry. You are the real deal and make your mother proud.

Spare is a great book. Love that Prince Harry read it himself. Strongly recommend it. Thank you Prince Harry for protecting your wife and children. Most important job any man, husband and father has. I love you, Megan and your children. I love your Mother. Princess Diana was a great woman. She displayed love in an amazing way towards all of humanity.

Absolutely one of the best books read this year. The story this young man shares regarding the ruthless way the press have hounded him and his family from childhood on should leave us all a bit grateful for what we might consider anonymous lives where we take for granted being able to go anywhere we choose without fear of the press taking photos at every turn. So very well narrated as well. I certainly don’t know you Harry but you seem like one hell of a guy!

It started out well but it got progressively whinier. I was sympathetic at first but got jaded , particularly in part 3.

Off with thier heads! The Royals and the Press are despicable. Harry and Meagan had to escape in order to survive. Good for them. May God protect them and their children.

Very interesting. Read to me like he was telling parts of his life that left an impression as he grew up, allowing himself to be real and vulnerable. Hopefully it’s not to embellish

It is clear from the details of Harry's account that this is not a "tell all" book for fame or fortune, but for survival. In a deluge of sadistic lies from the palace and the press, how else to maintain one's integrity and sanity? Fortunately for us, he is a great writer and narrator, and lets us in to his mind and heart - and Meghan's, too. He comes across, not as a prince, but as a friend, sharing his deepest experiences, thoughts and feelings. His self-reflection on his flaws and errors, his empathy and sensitivity to his fellow royals, in spite of their spite, and his courage and steadfastness in the face of sheer torture make this a compelling story. Thank you, Harry, from the bottom of my heart to yours!

Very well written and Prince Harry has the perfect voice. It felt like sitting down with a good friend and hearing him share his story with vulnerability, unfiltered. This is not the spoiled Prince portrayed in the media but a human being who has suffered immensely and struggled to come to terms with that, who has made mistakes and who has experienced the blessing of true love at great cost. He has dared to be different and as such there's bound to be haters. But as for me, I'm solidified as a fan.

Absolutely amazing. Harry is a person with great heart, deep emotional depth, and the ability to put that into words. His story resonated with me, and his narrating voice is so soothing, I know that I will come back to certain chapters to help ease my own stress. Bravo to the cycle breakers and truth tellers!

Well done book! I think the audiobook being read by Prince Harry made it all the better. I love that Harry is softer and more empathetic than most royals seem to be. I always thought he was getting the raw end of media. It’s interesting to hear it from his perspective.

This book is incredible! Really gives you an inside look at a type of life that most people couldn't comprehend nor handle. Prince Harry really goes in depth about what it's like to be a royal and the expectations that follow. He has a bit of a wild side which is very refreshing. Beautifully written and read by an amazing author!

This book just confirmed to me what I suspected for a while now. William may have gotten a great deal of his mother’s putter beauty- but that’s where it stopped! Harry not only is very handsome, he also was blessed with the MOST beautiful part of his Mother! Her heart! Her Spirit to fly and her courage to stand up and fight for her freedom to fly!♥️ I cried, laughed, swooned and became extremely angry at the challenges he endured in his short life. Then, found myself smiling at the blessings bestowed upon his and Meghan’s life. ♥️ Great Book! Well read and well written! Harry never asked to be born a prisoner of privilege- he was forced into it by DNA. His children will now have the TRUE privilege of growing up free to do and be ANYTHING they want!♥️ He’s now living his Mother’s dream for herself and her children!♥️ She’s one VERY happy Angel!♥️ ♥️God Bless The Prince (and his family) Of The People’s Hearts!♥️

Excellent narration. Beautifully written. To me it’s not about the monarchy so much as it is about learning to take control of one’s life under harrowing conditions. Looking at hard truths and essentially growing up. I don’t think anyone else could have shared from the inside what it is like to be the target of an out of control media and the paparazzi, to see your every mistake documented publicly, to read complete falsehoods about yourself and loved ones with no one issuing rebuttals, to see that kind of media hounding ruin every romantic relationship, and to see it turn to vitriol, racial hatred and death threats when he began to assert himself and not let them ruin his rel with « the American actress ». All this while carrying the confusion, fear and anger of the knowledge that the exact same media people and paparazzi had led to his mother’s misery, paranoia, questionable decisions and death. Too bad royalists won’t read it-It! Could be an excellent basis for much needed reforms that help, rather than damage, the monarchy. From my outsider, pro-human kindness perspective, anyway.

I am sure it was both therapeutic and monetarily rewarding for Harry to write and narrate this book. It was brave of him to do so. I have an interest in the royal family because they are more complex than most kin. At the end of the day, we are all human and go through things, and I have empathy for he and his family.

A story of heartbreak, triumph, romance, resilience, and hope. My heart hurt through Harry's retelling of his childhood, the loss of his mum, and the incredible challenges he faced. And yet, through the sadness, there was genuine caring for family, and the LOVE story between him and Meg is what everyone should feel like with their chosen partner. Not the hardships they have had to overcome but the deep LOVE that made it worth fighting for. I wish them all the best and look forward to seeing the good they will continue to do in the world through their service projects.

Hearing these words directly in his voice was far more impactful than reading it myself. I especially loved his reiteration of the wars. I have a whole new respect for celebrities in their war on the paparazzi. Or “Paps” That’s why I don’t believe anything on the supermarket magazines and I wish more celebrities would sue them all.

He is a great narrator. I found the book a tad boring at times. For me too much about his military life. A great insight into the toll of being constantly harassed by the paparazzi, the cost of losing relationships was heartbreaking. Very sad to see the psychological damage that ensued after the death of his mom. The insights into how things are done in the Royal Family and the toxic dysfunction in the family was eye opening. I feel sad for all of them, they are all caught up in web of toxicity. Except Camilla, She is a manipulative capital B.

I had an open mind about Prince Harry before I read the book. Heard a lot of criticism about him leaving the Royal Family, Meghan's issues, etc. After reading (listening) to this book, I have become a strong admirer of the Prince. The book is great. He is transparent about so many things. I am a big fan of The Crown, too and found this book a great supplement/successor to that series. People seem to forget how Harry's mother died. Harry was simply trying to avoid a repeat of the vultures causing another death. Bless you Prince Harry, Meghan and your family.

Love the honesty of this book. Us as Americans think oh he's a prince so her had a good life and it seems he was alone a lot in life. Not physically alone but alone in his thoughts and how to process them. I love when Meg came into his life. He even sounded happier reading each chapter.... Great job Haz...

Like many, I was curious to hear the inside story. I like Harry and I think he deserves to be happy like the rest of us, and it's a shame that his family wouldn't support his decision of who to fall in love with and wanting to marry. That said, there were parts when I was thinking "maybe he could've left this out", but I also know that if Diana was alive and written her own book, it would've said a lot of the same inside story as Harry did. Yes, he's privileged in many ways, but he was also trapped in a golden cage. He has used his position to do a lot of good things, and I believe he's a person with good intentions. It was an interesting read, and I wish the best for him and his family.

Harry gave us the skinny of the “Institution” and based on what he has shared, he and Meghan absolutely did the right thing leaving the UK!! Well written and so happy he no longer feels obligated to stay silent. His mother would be extremely proud of Harry speaking his truth, exactly like she did 25+ years ago. BRAVO HARRY!

This was a hard one to get through and I found myself dreading listening to it. I am glad I finished, but I did not enjoy Harry’s narration, which at times made me physically recoil, or the content which was mostly complaining about an incredibly privileged life, albeit one marred by the tragic loss of his mother. I would not recommend this book.

Well written and heart wrenching. No matter how you feel you can’t deny that they revoked their security and the way they left him in the dark when the Queen died was cruel and unfeeling. I wouldn’t want to do anything with a parent who treated me with such disregard. I hope Harry finds peace and happiness in his new home.
