Summary
Fifteen-year-old Ellie Mack was the perfect daughter. She was beloved by her parents, friends, and teachers. She and her boyfriend made a teenaged golden couple. She was days away from an idyllic summer vacation with her whole life ahead of her. And then she was gone. Now, her mother Laurel Mack is trying to put her life back together. It's been ten years since her daughter disappeared, seven years since her marriage ended, and only months since the last clue in Ellie's case was unearthed. So when she meets an unexpectedly charming man in a cafe, she is surprised at how quickly their flirtation develops into something deeper. Before she knows it, she's meeting Floyd's daughters-and his youngest, Poppy, takes her breath away. Looking at her is like looking at Ellie. And now, the unanswered questions she has tried so hard to put to rest haunt her anew...as well as some new ones about Floyd and Poppy...

This was a VIP Reward book and not the kind of book I normally read. However, it was an incredibly intricate and clever plot, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I wouldn’t have chosen this book but it was a free bonus selection, which is why I was totally surprised how much I enjoyed it!! The mystery was spelled out for the reader and it took the main character some time to wrap her mind around the situation. But the real plot was how each person dealt with this realization of the crime, not so much the crime itself. I couldn’t stop listening as I wanted to hear the outcome for each character. I would definitely recommend this as a thriller/personal crime book.

This was a great audiobook. The narration was good, even though it always takes me a minute to adapt to the very polish British accent. The story was gruesome in it's core, but it was way more about Lauren's family dynamics after the disappearance of her youngest daughter, then about Elle (the daughter) herself. My missing star goes to the predictability of the mystery. You already know who's the villain or what happened with Ellie since very early in the story, but even then, you can't stop listening, cause it's a great writing with characters full of layers, and you just need to know what the future holds for everyone entangled on that mess. I'll definitely be reading/listening more from this author.

Please give this book a chance. It starts a little slow but it gets better. So much better. And it builds up to a beautiful, albeit a poignant finish. I loved it.

Really enjoyed this story. Have read many by this author and they are usually pretty good. Story was Somewhat predictable but overall a great story and I enjoy this narrator.

Don't be fooled by the slowness and sadness of the first chapter or two. Before long you will be hooked. I thought this book was well-written and suspenseful. Some of it was very heartbreaking. I think it will leave a lasting impression upon me, similar to how "Before We Were Yours" has stayed in my memory for years. Worth the listen.

Really good kept me in my seat

I don't usually listen to this genre of storytelling but felt I needed a change, and I am glad I did. The story is definitely unsettling but the author can really write. She gives glimpses of scenes that took place in the past, along with the present narrative. This construction does not get confusing as it can in some stories. When the plot is finally played out, it all fits together perfectly. She creates characters with some depth to them and the whole story is written so that it is believable. I had read another of Lisa Jewell's novels (The Family Upstairs) which was not nearly as satisfying as this story - this felt much more maturely written. The narrator was very good and did a great job of one of the characters who was Irish (the rest were English).

It was good! Predictable, yet sometimes, surprising. There is just one question I had at the end, that never really got answered..but other things tied up nicely.

I loved the twist and turns of the book and the mostly happy ending. I always enjoy listening to books from other areas because the narrator’s voice and dialect make me feel like I’m really in that part of the world.

Profile Avatar
Christin T.

The voices threw me off because some of them sounded younger or older than the character. The lines blur between relationships and characters. Pretty predictable, but kept me interested the whole time.

Profile Avatar
MrsGremmels

I have a hard time getting into audiobooks because the voices never match what I am thinking, I don’t think Hannah’s voice would be so deep. I think this narrator did a good job. I pushed through and ended up loving it!!! Would definitely recommend!!

My second Lisa Jewell story and I am a fan. Already on to the next one of her stories. This one was a bit dark and difficult to read because of that, but hard to walk away from until it was over. Some of the characters so disturbing. Chilling and haunting though.

I really like all of Lisa Jewell's books. She weaves a great story and the endings are always satisfying. Not too deep so if you enjoy a good mystery and story with well developed characters, you'll like her books. The narrator did a great job with the different characters, however, I did not care for her choice of tone for the main character. It was too "sultry" and just did not fit the character in my opinion.

Book was interesting and kept me wanting to listen to find out the ending. It was a little slow and labored unnecessary parts of the story line with no real movement. The narrator had a slow, almost whiny tone that was irritating at times but all around it was a decent listen.

This was a great book. I was worried it would just be 8 hours of looking for but not finding a missing person, but the story and interactions were great. Narrator also did a great job of separating the characters through voices and accents.

This was my first audible book that I have listened to. The book was very good and kept me interested the entire time! The narrator was very easy to listen to, but how to voice that could put me to sleep at times! Overall, I am very happy with this book being my first audible book!

I cannot stop thinking about this book! It pulled me in right away. It is a sad story, but has great character growth and I really enjoyed how the series of events from different characters POVs pulled everything together. Narration was fantastic. Great accents and I could easily differentiate who was speaking based on the tone of her voice. 10/10.

The book had so much potential. Figured out the ending about 75% way in. Wish it had a more spectacular ending instead of a predictable one. Otherwise, it was an okay listen. Narrator did a good job.

I enjoyed this book! I really was anticipating how it would all play out. I did get a little freaked out when my own daughter didn’t respond to my texts as quickly as she usually does. It had me thinking, always trust your gut! Even if you need to be impolite. I would recommend this one! Narrator was very good! Her American accent was well done!

Profile Avatar
Kerry H.

I enjoyed the book. A little longer in the middle than it needed to be to get the point across but overall it was good. My only complaint is the amount of times the author used the word “yes.” Seriously, a gazillion times. Pick a different word every so often. You could play a drinking game by how many times it’s mentioned

Profile Avatar
Sabrina K.

Loved it! It was a good pace and held my interest.

Profile Avatar

Started strong, but about halfway through the plot became almost absurd. Jewell's writing is taut enough, and the novel's pacing is good, but I just couldn't muster the suspension of disbelief required to really get into this story. It was just too big a leap of faith--too many unexplained processes and unbelievable situations for me to buy into the plot line. The narrator, Helen Duff, was excellent, though. Great job on the different characters accents, and good voice modulation.

Profile Avatar
Lesley T.

Quite exciting and the narrator was wonderful with her Irish accent.
