Summary
Jack Ryan, Jr. is out to avenge the murder of an old friend, but the vein of evil he's tapped into may run too deep for him to handle in the latest electric entry in the #1 New York Times bestselling series.

While on vacation in Barcelona, Jack Ryan, Jr. is surprised to run into an old friend at a small café. A first, Renee Moore seems surprised to see Jack, but then she just seems irritated and distracted. After making plans to meet later, Jack leaves, only to miss the opportunity to ever speak to Renee again, as the café is destroyed minutes later by a suicide bomber. A desperate Jack plunges back into the ruins to save his friend, but it's too late. As she dies in his arms, she utters one word, 'Sammler.'

When the police show up they are initially suspicious of Jack until they are called off by a member of the Spanish Intelligence Service. This mysterious sequence of events sends the young Campus operative on an unrelenting search to find out the reason behind Renee's death. Along the way, he discovers that his old friend had secrets of her own—and some of them may have gotten her killed.

Jack has never backed down from a challenge, but some prey may be too big for one man.

Another great President Ryan and Jack, jr adventure. I missed having all of the campus team in the story but the plot was really strong. I also like that we had more time with both Ryan’s together in this book then in the past. The father and son bond is an important part of the Ryan franchise. One again Scott Brick did a marvelous job narrating the book.

It’s hard not to compare these latest Jack junior books to the first in the series which were so good. It is inevitable though. As a stand-alone book, the story is ok at best with a clever applied technological breakthrough being used for nefarious purposes. Jack junior doing nearly the exact same thing as he has done in the previous 3-4 books plus little campus involvement is getting trying though. And unbelievable now... my main gripe as with the previous book was how fast it all came to a conclusion, like the publisher forced the ending due to a schedule. It could have been so much better. Overall, I’m more and more disappointed with the Jack junior series and think this will be my last read unless reviews of the next one are overwhelmingly positive. If you’re after a fairly simple brainless techno thriller, this book is ok but there is better out there. A fading star of a series, sadly

The book was okay and got more interesting about halfway through. I am a little tired of the Jack going on vacation and just happening to fall into a big operation and making a nuisance of himself only having to be hauled back home against his will. Maybe it is time for Jack to grow up a little bit. However, my biggest frustration was the narrator who really got on my nerves. Just too must drama in the reading style.

I bought this. Couldn’t make it past the first 10min. I buy anywhere from 2-3 books a month. And have done so for the last several years. But this narrator sounds like how the Cussler books have gone; everything is “sit of your pants” with the “thrill a minute” inflection in the reading. It wears me out. How about you build a slow Jack Reacher or Alex Cross crescendo. I mean, even Pile Logan is more thrilling than these books and the narrator and author at least have a storytelling vide...as opposed to nonstop intense reading style.
