Summary
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The incredible true story of survival and salvation that is the basis for two major motion pictures: Unbroken and Unbroken: Path to Redemption.

“Extraordinarily moving . . . a powerfully drawn survival epic.”—The Wall Street Journal

Hailed as the top nonfiction book of the year by Time magazine • Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for biography

On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane’s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War.

The lieutenant’s name was Louis Zamperini. In boyhood, he’d been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and fleeing his home to ride the rails. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics and within sight of the four-minute mile. But when war had come, the athlete had become an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.

Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

Laura Hillenbrand writes with the same rich and vivid narrative voice she displayed in Seabiscuit. Telling an unforgettable story of a man’s journey into extremity, Unbroken is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.
Reviews

This unbelievable story is the best book I've read since Coming Out of the Ice. Fiction cannot hold a candle to truth! My day was totally made when I discovered a recent interview on Jay Leno with Louis Zamperini, now 95. An amazing man, a hard to digest but ultimately inspirational read!!

An amazing story of perserverance, courage and faith. Hillenbrand is an exceptional writer whose novels show the vulnerabilities of men and the courage needed to overcome them.

I’ve recently had eye surgery, so I chose to try audio books. I’m thoroughly impressed with both the format and the book. I thought this would last me about three weeks. I finished listening to it in five days. Amazing story!

Honestly I was bored for most of the book. It was a straightforward story and nothing was bad about it but I didn't feel captivated by the story. I can see why many people will love this story, especially history buffs but for someone who isn't familiar with Louie Zamperini I felt this read much like an autobiography that was dragged out.

Incredibly good. I have been scouring the Internet for all things Zamperini since experiencing this book. I agree with another reviewer's comment that you will sit in the driveway to listen to more-it is that amazing. I mostly listen to fiction, but now I have a new hunger for historical and other nonfiction writing. Bravo, Laura Hillenbrand.

If a book is going to discuss torture it's probably a good idea to make sure the narrator knows how to pronounce the word "sadism".

This book was fabulous. It's a shame the movie ignores Louie's epiphany. For me it was as incredible as his survival. Comparable to when John Paul II forgave his assassin. I've never cried reading (listening) to a book before, but I have now. All I can say is wow. I'd encourage anyone to read it. I continue to marvel at the men that fought for our country in this horrific war.

This book broke my heart as it's hard to believe the trauma the poor man went through. Very well researched by the author and I would recommend reading the book before watching the movie, as the movie cuts out so much detail.

What a fantastic way to learn about history. I am 52 years old and never knew the terrors that our veterans endured. This was an amazing story and well told. However it was worse than any horror movie I've ever watched my applause to Hildebrand's research and prose.

I find myself wishing my drive time was longer. Hours go by so fast. This book pulls you in and the emotions of each character are well described, so good that you can feel them in your throat as you hear the narrator read. I am constantly trying to find time to hear a little more.

GREAT writing! MARVELOUS reading! This amazing story is not only an entertaining read, in this case listen, it is a powerful account of love, change, sorrow, inspiration, horror, hurt, hate, and back to love again! I know that through Jesus Christ there can be true, real healing and strength! Louis found it, and so can all of us! Zamperini truly was a remarkable man!

A life changing book! No exaggeration. The author has an uncanny ability to make every word valuable to the story and character development. The storyline is also unmatched by any biography I've ever read. By the end of the book I just wanted to sit in Louie's presence and absorb him.

Completely amazing book!! It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and it will make you forever grateful to the men and women who sacrificed themselves for our country. As exciting and hard to put down as a novel, and once again it is proven that truth is stranger and more incredible than fiction. Everyone should read this!

I can't remember the last book I read that made me cry. But I'll remember now because this one did just that. Edward Hermann is a wonderful, engrossing narrator. This story has something for everyone, because it's not a story, like real life there is joy and sadness, fear and courage. Highly highly recommended.
