Uncle Tom's Cabin

How can slaves owners call themselves Christian? This book reveals that some owners did have souls and therefore gave slaves their freedom. But the many didn't and actually believe they were not doing anything wrong. I guess they skipped the story about how God use Moses to free the slaves in the Bible.

Great book! Touched me on a level I didn't expect. I recommend that everyone read this!

Beautiful, tragic and moving book.The narrator does an excellent job of character identification and expression.

This is a charming and emotional read I believe that it is the trigger that pushed the country in to civil war. I think they should both be required to read this book in school along with John Brown

I had never read this book and I really enjoyed listening to it through my headphones while walking . It was beautifully read and totally engrossing . Such an important story to be told even after these centuries have passed, and I think this book should be taught in school more. I live in Liverpool UK and this is a city that had a lot of wealth built from the slavery triangle of those past times . I would Definitely recommend this recording.

Awesome! Anyone who hasn’t read Uncle Tom’s Cabin is missing out on a big part of history. This could have been written as a true story. But the author admits that she heard these tales from many different real people and has woven their truths into a novel. So, the theme is true. What happened is true. I believe it wholeheartedly. By teaching this to others we can avoid this in the future. Everyone should read it. I must say that I got it on an audio book and enjoyed listening. It was truly a powerful story. It is true that there were Christians who owned slaves. BUT, it was sometimes to the benefit of the slave. Imagine if you were a child born to a slave and had no education and no family. It would be better to be held in the house and family of Christians who would not hurt them.

I'd never read this classic before, which I deeply regret. An amazing book with an enlightened perspective about the details of slavery and American history which I had never considered. We are dealing with the consequences of this abominable sin to this day. It is beautifully written, intensely engaging (of both the intellect and the emotions--we are both), and imparts truth vital to everyone. The fact that truth is NOT relative is clearly demonstrated. The narrator was fine.

I was so taken aback by this book. Although it was published in 1852, the expression of language is gorgeous and so many passages ring true for our times, particularly in light of the slavery which affects so many these days, even in the UK. It brilliantly gives many sides of the slave story but Tom's strong faith brought to mind those poor souls who suffered in the Holocaust but kept their faith in their God. I found the passage when the child died particularly moving because we have lost so many skills to help those who have failing health to have a good death and yet it was so natural at that time. The whole book has gripped me and the fact it is so long has been a joy not a chore. I found the narrator excellent because he has so many voices to express and he does a really good job at that. My world will be a bit emptier when I finish the book because I don't want it to end. I would highly recommend it.

An absolutely fascinating classic, much better than I was expecting. The character development & societal commentary was riveting. Also, one of the best narrators I've come across in audiobooks. I'd give him 6 stars.

absolutely wonderful

I think I read this when I was a young adolescent trying to smooth over what had happened in the past but I enjoyed his optimism and I think optimism makes everything better even when you’re in the worst conditions

Quite long but an important book. A must for everyone. Puts your own issues into perspective quickly whilst taking you into the lives of some wonderful characters. Personal favorite!

I read this book 55 years ago in high school I don’t recall the effects it had on me. But with killing going on in this country my heart weeps for my brothers and sisters and country.Lord have mercy on us.

I’m so glad I listened to, rather than read, this book. I’m sure I was able to comprehend it better. I’m afraid the dialect might have been a barrier for me. What a shame that would have been. This has become my favorite book.

I am left speechless by the perfect dramatization in this book. I cried so much reading the book; I still have tears in my eyes. The characters simply jump into life, right out of the pages of the book! I also love the narration and the narrator and I’ll like to say a big thank you to him.

Although this wonderful novel was written 166 years ago, it still has the power to captivate it's readers. The author illustrates a vivid picture of what it was like for a slave. The narrator did a wonderful job reading the latin.

An absolutely timeless book, beautiful, poignant, and yet most powerful with love, hope and humanity..truly touching the inner deepest.

Book was written well except for unclear scene changes. The reader was hard to hear during certain narration, like his mic gain wasn't turned up or he wasn't close enough to the mic.

Story jumps more than I care for, the narrator was good, just on the quiet side, not easy to listen to while driving.

One of the best books I have ever read. It had me in tears all through out the book. The love these characters show for Christ was amazing!!!!

After viewing Ken Burn's documentary "The Abolitionists" I felt it would be valuable to read this book. Uncle Tom's Cabin has, in the past century or so, been denigrated as presenting a skewed and patronizing view of slaves and slavery. I am persuaded that the contrary is true. This book is a valuable reference for those who want to understand the immense conundrum slavery posed to the nation. Although the Author's penchant for the melodramatic may be off-putting for some, it is consistent with other popular literature of its time. The varied representations of the characters is compelling and an effective mechanism to present the deep moral and ethical dilemmas created by the slave-based economy. I enjoyed and benefitted from the story as told by a a true abolitionist in the common language of her time.

This is such an amazing book. I heard that Lincoln met Harriet Beecher Stowe and said, "So, here's the lady that started the Civil War!" Mrs. Stowe's ability to articulately tell the story of Tom's travails pull you in to the story and won't let you go until the very end. I highly recommend this audiobook!

Well written a classic novel of -Americas biggest shame touches on the I humane treatment suffered by the negro nice reunions and sad losses

First “reading” of this heart-wrenching Classic. Ought to be required for EVERY American. But, sadly, it may now be among growing list of books “banned” by deniers of America’s shameful past. Highly Recommend. Listener grows accustomed to narrator as book progresses.

Excellent book. I was reminded how great it is to live as a free man. I hate the sad lives that the characters in this book had to endure. This should be a must read in all high schools.

This book was instrumental in setting the stage for abolition, and virtually everyone learns the title and its author at some point in school. Sadly, few ever read it, and so they miss out on a deeply reflective and accusatory take on the failings of white American society at all levels and a bold critique of precisely what was wrong with slavery in the first place *relative to other forms of relative hardship.* Time and again, we see in this tale that it was indeed possible for a slave to have a better life than might have been possible if he or she were free, but should circumstances such as death or debt require, that slave might be instantly sold off to a life of terror and abuse. Neither loyalty nor ingenuity were rewarded as a general rule for the slave, and benevolent masters were just as much within their rights to be tyrannical if they chose, with no help whatsoever under law for slaves who were subjected even to the most horrific and illogical cruelty. But what of the northerners who look down their noses at white slaveowners? Steeped in racial superiority, many wanted the slaves freed for the sake of white society and then sent off to literally anywhere. As Augustine St Claire pointedly asks his Vermont cousin, "If we emancipate, will you educate?" History shows too clearly that the answer was "no," and that even after a devastating war was fought, little enough was done to help those who had been enslaved or even safeguard their rights where gains were won entirely on their own. "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is an incredibly readable story, engrossing and approachable, and it speaks to us as clearly today as when it was written. I recommend following it with "The Half Has Never Been Told."

This is a ‘classic’ I’ve been wanting to read for a very long time. The book itself was very good (even if at times very hard to listen to). As for the narration, the narrator was good, but the ‘publicity’ at the beginning of every chapter was very distracting …

The writing is so vivid and alive. The narrator does a great job accurately portraying the emotions of the characters. I walked away with more appreciation of God’s word, the Bible, and a sobering thought of what life was like as an American slave.

Excellent story with lots of subplots. The saddest part is knowing that many of these conversations and character labelings are still taking place in homes today. Many abolitionists were still racists but believed that humans should not be owned or considered property of others, but also didn’t believe that blacked or dark skinned people were equal to white skinned people.

Great book! Uncle Tom has become a hero of mine and I can't get him out of my head. Also, little Eva, and many others in this book are very memorable and an example of faithfully following Christ and growing in grace. Harriet Beecher Stowe was apparently a gifted, insightful, and skilled author. I'm in my late 60's and read (listened) to this for the first time. Really eye-opening. I had never been viscerally engaged and moved like this at all in reckoning about our country's Black slavery history. This narrator was really good too. I want to hear more with this narrator if possible. I also plan to read more about the experiences of Black slaves during those times.

I had heard reference to this book my entire life but I had never read it. I was shocked to find out how much loved the story. it was a genuine page turner. The actual book is so far different than what is generally understood.

Welcome to America! A world known for everything the Bible speaks about. Oh spiritual these slave owners were. l bet anyone who had lived through slavery would be able to relate to everything from this book.

I read the book in 8th or 9th grade. Now, more than 50 years later, I enjoyed listening to the story. It was engaging. (Advantages of a mature mind!) Narration was very good.

a must listen or read. wonderful characters and a great story. shining the light on the abomination that is slavery. the misuse of religion to justify cruelty. the parallels that remain today as vulnerable, desperate people look for sanctuary across the world , how hard their journey is and how poor their welcome. are we in the west still benefiting from the degradation of vulnerable people in the products we use and consume. the need for heroes to continue to inspire a new generation to show us things should be and can be done better; for all.

Amazing narration; the reader had so many voices for the different characters. The content was, though, what most surprised me. I had heard of this book all my life but never knew what a powerful social and spiritual work it was.

This is such an amazing hook. I would recommend it to anyone who’s interested in the slaves. At times it’s sad other times it’s funny. All in all a great book. One other thing, the narrator is excellent

It wasn't anything like people said it to be. Uncle Tom was a noble righteous man. I would have been proud to know him. I also enjoyed most of the other characters in the book. So glad I selected it, it was much better than I imagined. The narrator, John Greenman was excellent. I enjoy audio books too.

I was looking for a free book on Audible and saw Uncle Tom’s Cabin. I remember it was a required reading in high school for some students. So I thought I would read it. The book was published in 1852. It has been over 150 years and we are still struggling with prejudice against black Americans. This book is relevant to the issues we are dealing with today. I enjoyed the characters’ relationships with their masters, fellow slaves and their faith in God. At times my heart broke for the inhuman treatment of people by other people. The language is very different from today’s so I would recommend listening to it instead of reading it. This book should be in the top 10 must reads of 2020!

I am 56 years old and somehow I never managed to read this book it’s eye opening life experiences of both good and evil things happening I’ve learned a lot and also a lot about our history in America I would gladly listen to it again the narrator really brings each character to life I can listen to him all day I enjoy his voice I will look for other audiobooks that he has narrated I’m sure I will enjoy them too

Excellent book that I wish EVERY American should read! It gave us a glimpse of what life was like for the slave, slave owner, the abolitionist, and the many people who fell somewhere in between in thought and politics about slavery. More than morality, this books builds to climax what freedom really is and what Christianity is at its core. This is an excellent choice of books for This specific time in history!

What a disturbing eye opener, I knew these things happened but this book brings it to life. excellent narration

I understand why this book moved a nation to an outcry of humanity and compassion. It just goes to show people what can happen when you stand for Justice. Mrs. Stowe show great restraint when writing this book, because we know the atrocities were much worse during this part of history. I still cried when she wrote with such solicitousness when good people suffered in this this book. I understand the time period still it is unsettling that this still goes on even today.

An excellent read and reader. All these years have passed and still we see the problem exists. When will this be a read that reflects accurately how things used to be and how far we have come.

wasn't very good

We are all opposed in some way but these humans had to endure a lot more than most! I found this book and narration to be very enlightening to the chaos a "colored person" lived and died! Very good book to listen to!

This was a long book for me to get through as it seemed to start a little slow for me. However, the book got moving and I could really feel for the characters. I wasn't a big fan of the narrator but overall, it wasn't bad.
