Summary
A deep dive into the spectrum of Autistic experience and the phenomenon of masked Autism, giving individuals the tools to safely uncover their true selves while broadening society’s narrow understanding of neurodiversity

“A remarkable work that will stand at the forefront of the neurodiversity movement.”—Barry M. Prizant, PhD, CCC-SLP, author of Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism

For every visibly Autistic person you meet, there are countless “masked” Autistic people who pass as neurotypical. Masking is a common coping mechanism in which Autistic people hide their identifiably Autistic traits in order to fit in with societal norms, adopting a superficial personality at the expense of their mental health. This can include suppressing harmless stims, papering over communication challenges by presenting as unassuming and mild-mannered, and forcing themselves into situations that cause severe anxiety, all so they aren’t seen as needy or “odd.”

In Unmasking Autism, Dr. Devon Price shares his personal experience with masking and blends history, social science research, prescriptions, and personal profiles to tell a story of neurodivergence that has thus far been dominated by those on the outside looking in. For Dr. Price and many others, Autism is a deep source of uniqueness and beauty. Unfortunately, living in a neurotypical world means it can also be a source of incredible alienation and pain. Most masked Autistic individuals struggle for decades before discovering who they truly are. They are also more likely to be marginalized in terms of race, gender, sexual orientation, class, and other factors, which contributes to their suffering and invisibility. Dr. Price lays the groundwork for unmasking and offers exercises that encourage self-expression, including:

• Celebrating special interests
• Cultivating Autistic relationships
• Reframing Autistic stereotypes
• And rediscovering your values

It’s time to honor the needs, diversity, and unique strengths of Autistic people so that they no longer have to mask—and it’s time for greater public acceptance and accommodation of difference. In embracing neurodiversity, we can all reap the rewards of nonconformity and learn to live authentically, Autistic and neurotypical people alike.

I had heard that this is the kind of book that can change your life, and this is a rare example of a book that truly lives up to the hype. Devon writes exquisitly clearly, uses lots of examples to build understanding of concepts and references stories of real people along with studies to describe ways of navigating a world designed for neurotypicals as an autistic person. I wish everyone would engage with this book. I love that it is written for and centers autistic readers. I learned and reflected on every page. Along with the narrative, there were easy exercises to complete in order to move toward unmasking and living authentically.

I loved this book, incredibly insightful and helpful. I love this book even for people that aren’t autistic but maybe adhd or otherwise neurodiverse.

This is the kind of book that gives you insight on the level you can only dream of achieving through lifelong therapy (which is likely not even enough because autistic people are under-diagnosed, under-researched, and lack appropriate support/therapies), all in less than 10 hours (if listening to the audiobook). I cannot recommend this book enough!

I found this book incredibly insightful and understanding in it's approach to Autism. As someone who grew up masking and is now working to unmask it is comforting to know that this endeavor is difficult but wholly worth it.

Possibly my favourite book ever. A necessary eye opener. Made me want to embrace both my own and others weirdness or difference. I keep re listening to this and “laziness does not exist”. Very excited about Devon’s next book!

My therapist told me she thinks I may be autistic, and when I started researching autism my whole world changed. The contents of this book are a revelation.

Excellent book for those who are learning they are a masked autistic, and very informative for friends and family. Having the author read it was amazing!

Provides a personal and professional look at the Autistic experience. This book is not the traditional stereotypical explanation of autism; but rather an eye opening narrative of different ways autism looks and how it feels to be neurodivergent. As someone who was diagnosed in my early 20s, this book has made me feel less alone and less broken and a great aid in further exploring myself and my neurodivergence. Being a queer, trans man, I especially appreciate the acknowledgment of Queer/Autistic intersectionality. I recommend this book to Autistic people as well as their friends and family members to better understand the Autistic Experience. I enjoyed that the book was narrated by the author, giving it a more personal and natural feeling.
