Summary
During one of the most important times in the civil rights movement, one unforgettable family goes on a road trip in this Newbery and Coretta Scott King Honoree, from author Christopher Paul Curtis, recipient of the Coretta Scott King–Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement.

When the Watson family—ten-year-old Kenny, Momma, Dad, little sister Joetta, and brother Byron—sets out on a trip south to visit Grandma in Birmingham, Alabama, they don’t realize that they’re heading toward one of the darkest moments in America’s history. The Watsons’ journey reminds us that even in the hardest times, laughter and family can help us get through anything.

Somehow I missed the fact that this book might have been intended for kids or young adults. I am glad that I didn't know because I probably would have passed on this book if I had. I don't review books often, so it's got to be really good or bad for me to take the time. This one....really good. Everything: story, narrator, history, emotion, this book has it all. It deals with complex situations often with humor and always through the eyes of a little 10 year old kid. Please read this book. You will not be sorry.

It is a very clever book. My daughter (11 years) and I found ourselves laughing out loud. I also like the fact that it provided insight for her into that period of our history. Highly recommend.

Listened with my children, we all enjoyed it, this book was simultaneously humorous and deep. I was not expecting to like it so much. Lavar Burton did an excellent job narrating.
