Summary
“An engaging, beautifully synthesized page-turner” (Slate). The #1 New York Times bestseller and Time #1 Nonfiction Book of the Year: Hillary Rodham Clinton’s most personal memoir yet, about the 2016 presidential election.

In this “candid and blackly funny” (The New York Times) memoir, Hillary Rodham Clinton reveals what she was thinking and feeling during one of the most controversial and unpredictable presidential elections in history. She takes us inside the intense personal experience of becoming the first woman nominated for president by a major party in an election marked by rage, sexism, exhilarating highs and infuriating lows, stranger-than-fiction twists, Russian interference, and an opponent who broke all the rules.

“At her most emotionally raw” (People), Hillary describes what it was like to run against Donald Trump, the mistakes she made, how she has coped with a shocking and devastating loss, and how she found the strength to pick herself back up afterward. She tells readers what it took to get back on her feet—the rituals, relationships, and reading that got her through, and what the experience has taught her about life. In this “feminist manifesto” (The New York Times), she speaks to the challenges of being a strong woman in the public eye, the criticism over her voice, age, and appearance, and the double standard confronting women in politics.

Offering a “bracing... guide to our political arena” (The Washington Post), What Happened lays out how the 2016 election was marked by an unprecedented assault on our democracy by a foreign adversary. By analyzing the evidence and connecting the dots, Hillary shows just how dangerous the forces are that shaped the outcome, and why Americans need to understand them to protect our values and our democracy in the future.

The election of 2016 was unprecedented and historic. What Happened is the story of that campaign, now with a new epilogue showing how Hillary grappled with many of her worst fears coming true in the Trump Era, while finding new hope in a surge of civic activism, women running for office, and young people marching in the streets.

The blame is on everyone else but herself for losing and not connecting with the major of Americans.

I have read other books by Hillary., but I got so much out of this one on a personal level. I believe everyone should read this book. Her insights are timeless and so well articulated. She gave words to things I’ve encountered my entire life. Wether you love her or hate her you can not deny her truth. It’s important not in understanding her but the world in which a woman attempts to lead and use her voice. We all need to do better. Thank you Hillary for your brutal honesty.

She wanted to tell her side of the story and I was eager to hear. Valid arguments, interesting perspectives and honestly heartfelt. The book is organized in a pre, during and post manner that gave me a greater understanding of both the author and the circumstances that led to her defeat. The author reads her book flawlessly. Time well spent.

Book starts out a little sappy at first, but the last half is excellent. She’s a class act and it’s only by a fluke that she’s not president.

As a Hillary Clinton supporter, I viewed this book as very cathartic. While it scratched the surface of emotions that were so intense following the weeks after her losing the election, it also inspired and made me fall in love with her all over again. The audio version made me feel as though we were talking over a cup of coffee at the kitchen table. This is one of those books however that I sort of wish I had as a hard cover book, so I could read and re-read what was being said to help me absorb the message better. I will most assuredly be listening to it again. I highly recommended the book.

Being able to step into her kitchen and sit down at her table and listen to what happened has been an eye opener. Hilary’s steady mind and stable behavior through the campaign debates were most impressive. I voted for her for many reasons and she confirmed what I believed she would have been for us in her book which is logical, wise and optimistic. I wish she were our president

The book is very good. Admission I’m not done- got 8 tracks left. But there’s so much in this book. Hillary is intelligent and strong, compassionate and humble. Unlike one reviewer here , she does apologize for mistakes SHE made during the campaign. I learned more about how much it takes “to run”. . I also wanted to know why some people “ hate” her? I thought her book might shed light on this and it did. But there is so much more. She talks about the Russian interference in the election and the way false and even ludicrous story’s were spewed out through all of these new media platforms which we are all aware of now is a major problem for democracy. She talks about the media , even the left leaning media endlessly highlighting her stupid emails rather than her proposed plans to help our country’s problems, and explores “ why?” She explains complicated material well. What went on during the campaign is still going on and is the biggest threat to our democracy- the split between parties and the false and distorted news and conspiracy theories. She talks about comey the fbi director , his pointless announcement at the last weeks, about her emails again. Yet at the same time trump was being investigated for shocking involvement with the Russians and his campaign and comey keeps it silent “ so as not to interfere with a current election.” All of this stuff so troubling for our country and the biggest take away for me. There’s much information in this book and she explains complicated info well . She briefly touched on her long history of politically damaging and false accusations, all proved false but have a way of sticking, and it WAS unfair. Combined with the crazy conspiracy theories that circulated during the campaign. I found her to be brave ( to even go back and talk about the hurtful assults on her), and authentic, ( also a great narrator!), , that she can still hold her head high and carry on with her convictions to help our country as a private citizen. Some critics accuse her of whining or tell her “ to get over it already, and I will tell you she does anything but!!!! There is not a drop of whining here! Her passion for democracy and her fears for its future really drive her book. Along with personal details that made me feel I was getting a birds eye view of the campaign trail which was fun. She would have been a wonderful president, now in her second term. She came so shockingly close, and something this serious as an elected president could be highjacked right under our collective noses by a hair margin to an Unqualified person , should make us all sit upright, hold our media accountable and ourselves, to fight back for a healthy democracy. ….. It’s not a heavy book, it’s easy and access-able Yet so important .and yes, she does talk about her strengths and skills and how she was ready to hit the ground running. I was glad to read it and I respected her more for it. Even though most likely she’ll get gut punched by certain media , but shame on them. I’m ready to punch back. ! She’s an awesome woman.

Fantastic book and a great insight into Hillary's views and thoughts on everything. I love her personal accounts and stories. She humor, thoughts and interests remind me of my own family. I love that she does the audio. I tend to only listen to books narrated by the author as it is their story they are telling.

Dear God she can bang on. And on. Charmless self justification. Were I an American voter I might have been tempted to vote for the Don.

This was an EXCEPTIONAL work. Well narrated and well written. I was moved to tears at the end. This perspective is valid and truly explains what caused the election to slip away from Mrs Clinton. She would have been a great president. Her loss was America's loss. Her explanation of things had the benefit of accuracy, having been written immediately after the actual events. The value of her work will be seen in the future as opposed to the present, as there is always the risk of seeing this as "sour grapes". I particularly enjoyed the book with her voice and expression. It was just amazing.

It gets a little bogged down with conspiracy theory at points. But if you persevere it is worth the wait.
