Summary
Emily Brontë's only novel, published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, tells the tale of the all-encompassing and passionate, yet thwarted, love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and how this unresolved passion eventually destroys them and many around them.

Now considered a classic of English literature, Wuthering Heights met with mixed reviews by critics when it first appeared, with many horrified by the stark depictions of mental and physical cruelty. Though Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre was originally considered the best of the Brontë sisters' works, many subsequent critics of Wuthering Heights argued that its originality and achievement made it superior. Although I never understood Joseph, Ruth did a good job. It’s a classic known for being a bit dark, so there’s that. But I listened to the end and liked it.

I am so bored with this book. I’m about half way through but I had to take a break for a couple weeks. I keep hoping something, anything of interest will happen but I am losing hope.

Excellent, I love this classic novel. Love the darkness of the characters and the love between the characters.

I enjoyed listening to this story as read by Ms. Golding. When you consider when this was written and there was little to compare it to, you have to give Ms Bronte kudos. We are exposed to so much more now that this might seem ‘boring’ some, but what an imagination in 1847!!

Wow amazing book! Incredible narration by Ruth Golding. She really is brilliant with all those different characters to narrate. I really loved it! Thank you!

I thought as a classic this story would be more engaging. Definitely not so. It was okay but shows the ridiculous nuances of old England and the trappings of women and outrageous behavior of men.

The book was disturbing. What I found most surprising is I don't think the reader was supposed to like Heathcliff or Cathy, or any of the main characters for that matter. The original protagonist then told the story through another character, who told the story through others. There was no reason for the original storyteller in any of it. It was lengthy and rambling. I saw no redeeming quality in many of the characters except at the end which was quick and unlike the rest of the book in nature. The obsession between Heathcliff and Cathy was exhausting. The characters were predictable and one dimensional. I didn't know who to pull for except myself for getting through it. I enjoy reading the classics but am glad to be past this one and will not read it again. I wish Bronte had written other books so she is not defined by this.

It's such a classic that I persevered. It took me numerous bored and irritated starts but about 4 hours in I got into it. The reader was very well-suited and there was something captivating in the dark twists and turns of the characters and story. After finishing, I went back and re-listened to the first 4-5 hours and was able to pick up so much more. I loved listening to Jane Eyre, and tho I'm glad that I've now 'read' Wuthering Heights, just know that it's a dark experience with very little redeeming or upllifting about it.

Ruth Golding is excellent but I had to put it on 1.25 speed because it was so slow. (I might not have minded the pace if I had enjoyed the book more, but it was a slog.)

This is my favorite book of all time. I was scared to listen to it bc I was afraid I wouldn’t like it as much as hearing it in my own voice. Ruth’s real accent and character portrayals are way better than the ones in my head. I understood Joseph better than when I’ve read it. I will listen again.
