TEJU COLE was raised in Nigeria and came to the United States in 1992. He is a writer, photographer, and professional historian of Early Netherlandish art. His first book, Open City, was the winner of the Pen/Hemingway Prize, a National Book Critics Circle award finalist, and named one of the best books of the year by more than 20 publications. He lives in New York City.
