Biloxi: A Novel

Unabridged Audiobook

Written By: Mary Miller

Narrated By: Danny Campbell

Date: May 2019

Duration: 7 hours 44 minutes

Mary Miller seizes the mantle of Southern literature with this wry tale of middle age and the unexpected turns a life can take.

Like her predecessors Ann Beattie and Raymond Carver, Mary Miller brings an essential voice to her generation. Building on her critically acclaimed novel The Last Days of California and her biting collection Always Happy Hour, Miller slyly transports listeners to her unapologetic corner of the South-this time, Biloxi, Mississippi, home to sixty-three-year-old Louis McDonald, Jr. His wife of thirty-seven years left him, his father has passed-and he has impulsively retired from his job in anticipation of an inheritance check that may not come. In the meantime, he watches reality television, sips beer, and avoids his ex-wife and daughter. One day, he stops at a house advertising free dogs and meets overweight mixed-breed Layla. Unexpectedly, Louis takes her, and, newly invigorated, begins investigating local dog parks and buying extra bologna. Mining the absurdities of life with her signature 'droll minimalist's-eye view of America' (Joyce Carol Oates), Biloxi affirms Miller's place in contemporary literature.

I found it an interesting portrayal of a Trump fan and Fox watcher. I didn’t believe the ending, it seemed unlikely that he could get it together and drive a van while putting away a six pack every day. I also saw him as a hazard on the road, it will make me more careful when driving. There was also the aspect of him feeding his dog a very bad diet. It was also part of his personality that he didn’t consider taking the poor dog to a veterinarian and finding out why the gagging. As I said, a person who spent money on booze rather than taking care of his dog and not caring how he endangered other people with his actions. An interesting believable portrait of a man of 63, adrift and blaming other people.

At first the story seemed a bit dull but half way the plot twisted and made it an interesting read or better said interesting to listen to. Loved the narrator. Brings the main character to life

  • Jeffrey E.

    Real-life believable story.

  • Gorana B.

    Great book and narrator

  • Wendy Mercado

The narrator was perfect for this story! A story told from a 63 year old man's perspective is unusual and I really enjoyed it.
