The story was good but it was ruined for me by the REALLY bad narration.
The story line was good but the narrators representation of the African American characters in the book set my teeth on edge. I was very offended that the black female character described a bright, intelligent, and college educated was represented in a voice similar to the black butler in the old Shirley Temple movies. The only African American in the story who was well spoken was the crazy murdering police chief. I did not like the narration of this story at all. The narration hampered a very good story line and othewise enjoyable story.
I am a huge Lisa Scottoline fan and, being from eastern Pennsylvania, I enjoy her Philadelphia setting because I can relate to many of the locations. This book is a good mystery with strong female leads, which is also classic Scottoline. I could relate to Vicki, but I must admit that I miss Bennie, Judy, and Mary from the Rosato law firm. The narrator of this audio book is Barbara Rosenblatt who gives voice to Stephanie Plum, et. al., in Janet Evanovich's series. I was a bit annoyed that the men sounded like Joe and Ranger, the black female character sounded like Lula, and Vickie sounded like Stephanie. I think she could have changed it up a bit. At times I forgot what book I was listening to.
The narrator sounded like they were chewing gum or had a massive amount of saliva in her mouth. It was distracting to listen to while trying to understand the plot line .
Typical Scottoline -- an attractive young heorine in a dangerous position. A lot of highly unlikely situations and danger, but in the end, all works out. Of course, not quite the way you think it might, but at least you know you'll get a satisfactory conclusion.
This one's a little more far-fetched than others but still interesting and worth a listen.
