Summary
When an intricate old map is found stuffed into the walls of the bistro in Three Pines, it at first seems no more than a curiosity. But the closer the villagers look, the stranger it becomes.
Given to Armand Gamache as a gift the first day of his new job, the map eventually leads him to shattering secrets. To an old friend and older adversary. It leads the former Chief of Homicide for the Sûreté du Québec to places even he is afraid to go. But must.

And there he finds four young cadets in the Sûreté academy, and a dead professor. And, with the body, a copy of the old, odd map.

Everywhere Gamache turns, he sees Amelia Choquet, one of the cadets. Tattooed and pierced. Guarded and angry. Amelia is more likely to be found on the other side of a police line-up. And yet she is in the academy. A protégée of the murdered professor.

The focus of the investigation soon turns to Gamache himself and his mysterious relationship with Amelia, and his possible involvement in the crime. The frantic search for answers takes the investigators back to Three Pines and a stained glass window with its own horrific secrets.

For both Amelia Choquet and Armand Gamache, the time has come for a great reckoning.

Another incredible book from Louise Penny. I continue to be amazed by her ability to create such diverse, well-rounded characters with such depth of humanness. She has also mastered the ability to incorporate such a variety of elements into the story, that one is treated to poetry, music, scripture, a complex range of vulnerability and emotion, with bursts of unexpected humor. The author is clearly a very intelligent and well-read woman. The narrator Mr. Bathurst is no Ralph Cosham, but has certainly proven to be a worthy replacement. I'm looking forward with much anticipation to the next Inspector Gamache novel.

This is the 12th in the Gamache series that I have listened to, and this one is my favorite. The story keeps moving, has moments of humor, and is extremely creative. And the new narrator, Robert Bathurst, is wonderful. He reads lots of voices and keeps them straight, and his acting background apparently didn't hurt his abilities as a reader. Excellent.

I so enjoy this series but am disappointed in the new narrator. I wish Louise Penny had chosen a narrator with more of a French accent like the original narrator than a British accent. Robert Brathurst's speaking is choppy and less 'calming' than the original representation of Gamache in the first books. I did enjoy the reference to orienteering. So unique! And coming full circle, bringing back a character from Gamache's past and pulling together some loose ends. I will continue with the series because I love the characters!

This was a very interesting and intriguing book. I really enjoyed every minute! Ruth is my absolute favorite character!!!! Who woulda thunk it? Ruth has become the most lovable “old hag” with her wise ass remarks, advice and cunning. Getting accustomed to Robert Bathurst, still miss Ralph Cosham.

This book thoroughly kept me company on a long road trip through Quebec this summer. The setting and the characters felt very alive for me as I was driving through the country side. Can't wait to download the next in the series to keep me awake on the trip home.

Another great job from the author. This is my second I've listened to and both were great with great characters.

A nice change on the typical Penny tale, just not my favorite. The story just seems a bit improbable and overly contrived. I guess I'd like to see a bit more from one of my favorite authors than was delivered here. It was enjoyable all the same, just not a five star tale. I'm warming up to the new narrator of the series though, he does a nice job with this one.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It keeps you guessing all the way to the end and the characters are so well developed. One of the best books I've read in years!

Another excellent novel from Louise Penny. This is one of her best. Great plot with superb character development. I was disappointed when I reached the conclusion as I have to wait for the next novel. Robert Bathurst's narration rendered the Audiobook a pleasure. His version of Ruth was spot on.
