Unabridged Audiobook
I thought it was the original idea so I'll say its mid.
I had very high expectations for this book also since I too loved her first two books. This one was just okay. I was expecting a lot more for the ending, what we were left with, however; still gives me the creeps, and not in a good way.
I really loved her last two books so I had high expectations. Extremely disappointed. I wanted it to be over. The inner monologue of the main character was too much. I’d find myself getting distracted and getting lost. Never have I ever said a book was TOO descriptive.
I’d give this book 2 1/2 stars, but that’s not an option, so I was generous. The mystery in this book is solid. It had the requisite surprise twist at the end that I didn’t see coming, and made me look back at the rest of the story with a different perspective. But the writing…the writing is not so solid. The author uses so many metaphors and analogies (“her voice was like a hot knife cutting through butter”) that it became ridiculous. I found myself laughing every time she used another one. The characters are rote, and I never got the feeling that they are real people. Their behavior at times is predictable and silly (think of the whole “hear a noise, go into the basement, get murdered” trope). I kept listening to uncover the mystery, but many times throughout this book, I seriously considered putting it down and not picking it up again.
