I'm a H. Beam Piper fan from way back. This is one of his best. Am I the only one who notices how much of his work is used in the Star Trek series? I bet not. I got hooked by the Little Fuzzies, in junior high and have read everything I can get my hands on ever since. I'm a grandma now, and I can't wait to hook my grandkids with the Little Fuzzies!
I started this book not expecting much more than the average pulp fiction novel. I was surprised by how engaging it was from the beginning. The characters are excellent, and their motivations are clear. The political message was incredibly poignant. More so than the usual Heinlein type dialogues. The main story conclusion was very satisfying and then it ended. Perfect.
