Summary
From the New York Times bestselling author of Enders Game comes a brand-new series following a teen who wakes up on an abandoned Earth to discover that he’s a clone!

Laz is a side-stepper: a teen with the incredible power to jump his consciousness to alternate versions of himself in parallel worlds. All his life, there was no mistake that a little side-stepping couldn’t fix.

Until Laz wakes up one day in a cloning facility on a seemingly abandoned Earth.

Laz finds himself surrounded by hundreds of other clones, all dead, and quickly realizes that he too must be a clone of his original self. Laz has no idea what happened to the world he remembers as vibrant and bustling only yesterday, and he struggles to survive in the barren wasteland he’s now trapped in. But the question that haunts him isn’t why was he created, but instead, who woke him up … and why?

There’s only a single bright spot in Laz’s new life: one other clone appears to still be alive, although she remains asleep. Deep down, Laz believes that this girl holds the key to the mysteries plaguing him, but if he wakes her up, she’ll be trapped in this hellscape with him.

This is one problem that Laz can’t just side-step his way out of.

Orson Scott Card comes up with some weird and wonderful concepts and this was one of them. A tad slow but not enough that I would lower my 5 star rating. Thanks once again for an enjoyable journey through an impossible idea. PS Narrator was top notch.

I found the story a tad tedious; an interesting concept that is unpacked and untangled and discussed to death… and the incessantly sarcastic, argumentative banter between the teen-aged protagonists added to the tedium. I enjoy a cerebral idea but wish there had been more warmth, joy, something uplifting in tone now and then to buoy the plot. We’re told there is love for others, including the pack of four, but I didn’t feel it. Oddly remote tone; I kept waiting for tragedy or happiness or something emotionally resonant, but the blank tone remained (although I appreciated the ending). I haven’t read Orson Scott Card in decades and I now vaguely remember I used to find him clever and unsettling. I got used to the narrator but also thought his bass-baritone voice was a weird match to bringing two young voices to life.

The book overall was good. It got a little confusing at times but still able to keep up. Towards the end though it felt like… unfinished?? For lack of a better word.. idk. Narrator was good.

Even though the author explained it 25 times, I think he was missing something. I can’t put my finger on quite what was wrong, or what was missing, but there was something. Overall, this book is on par with what you would expect from Orson Scott Card. If you’ve enjoyed his other works, you’ll enjoy this book.

The book started off great but then went into in-depth discussions on the protagonists ability to side slip into parallel dimensions. Interesting book but the author went a little too far into the weeds into theory.

This book got me hooked up from the start, it’s such an interesting world, I couldn’t stop listening. The narrator is amazing as well!

Interesting yet difficult concept of multiple parallel worlds. Witty dialogue. Plot a bit naive in places. The narrator was excellent.

Started slow but glad I stayed with it. Lots of self communication that I didn’t particularly enjoy at first but later it really helped to know the characters. Interesting storyline about parallel time streams and the concept of free will. Some incongruencies in the description of the whole time stream concept—but this is science fiction. Enjoyed the listen!
